About the Team:
The Sensors Division within STR focuses on the development and analysis of advanced sensor systems in the RF, acoustic, and electro-optical domains. This includes the design and development of novel sensors and advanced information processing techniques from ideation to prototype implementations.
The Undersea Systems and Acoustics (USA) Group develops and delivers advanced undersea sensor and signal processing systems related to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and counter-ISR applications.
The Role:
The USA Group is hiring an Undersea Technology Engineer who can apply knowledge in ocean, mechanical, and electrical engineering to support the design, development, integration and fielding of advanced prototype sensors, sources, modems, arrays, platforms, and systems. As an Undersea Technology Engineer, you will collaborate with a diverse team of engineers responsible for fielding first-of-kind innovative prototype systems. This often involves early trade studies and designs that progressively lead to subsystem testing in the laboratory and then to field testing in the ocean to show new and novel system concept solutions to complex and challenging national security problems.
A successful candidate will have a balance of the following areas: simulation and analysis of undersea systems (acoustic, thermal, electrical, mechanical), experience implementing and integrating undersea systems, knowledge of ocean engineering best-practices, hands-on laboratory and field test planning and execution, and experience with rapid prototyping. Strong technical, interpersonal, communication, and technical leadership skills are expected.
The Role:
- Technical execution
- Develop technical solutions (algorithms, processing, test approaches, system or mechanical designs etc.) to undersea problems according to a schedule with some oversight from a team lead or principal investigator (PI)
- Articulate and communicate those solutions to team members, team leadership, and Group management
- Coordinate tasking across multiple projects to effectively collaborate with teammates (internal to STR or external)
- Leverage ocean engineering domain experience to advise task or project leadership on alternate approaches and tradeoffs
- Plan, coordinate, and execute laboratory and at-sea testing efforts
- Write and present technical presentations and reports with support from a team lead or PI
Who you are:
- MS degree (or BS with 2+ years of relevant technical experience) with background in physical oceanography, underwater acoustics, ocean engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, applied mathematics or related field
- Ability to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government
- Robust sense of initiative, a self-starter who can work independently
- Interest and aptitude for working on large, complex technical projects and teams
- Mission oriented with a strong ability contribute to team goals and work in a team environment to deliver real world results
- Good communication skills
- Proficient at technical writing
Even Better:
- Active security clearance
- Experience with sonar processing chains, undersea systems, and undersea acoustics
- Experience interacting with U.S. Navy and other U.S. Government organizations and processes
- Knowledge of one or more of the following topic areas: underwater acoustic propagation and processing related to sonar or communications; UUV design, design tools, and component technology; embedded processing; architectures for unmanned systems; sensor, source, and array design (towed, conformal, drifting, or bottomed).
- Experience with field testing, especially at-sea testing including system deployment, operation, and recovery operations.
- Ability to interact with technical and non-technical customers and external teammates to understand their technical issues, frame potential solutions and develop collaborative projects
- Scientific curiosity and creativity
- Skills in MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++
