UI Product Designer
About the role
At Capital One, we're committed to developing innovative, inclusive and intuitive product experiences to help our customers succeed with credit.
We're looking for a passionate, dynamic user interface designer to infuse design and progressive best practices into our growing business. Experience isn't everything here, we want to see applications from those with a natural flair for creating beautiful interfaces and interactions to keep pushing the boundaries of what we deliver for our customers.
You'll be someone looking to join an experienced group of UX, UI and Content designers, contributing to the strategic design and product direction in our customer outcomes space. You have a high bar for design output, and you know how to help partner teams understand the value of investing in customer-centred initiatives. You're open to taking on feedback and know when to challenge to get to the right outcome for the end user.
About the team
Design at Capital One is made up of three multi-disciplinary teams. This role is in our Product Design Team. But you'll also get to collaborate and learn from our in-house Studio (who look after our marketing and communications creatives) and our Design Strategy team (who help shape and influence our long term thinking). We're all part of wider outcome teams, each with dedicated Designers, Product Managers and Engineers. These outcome teams sit across key journey touchpoints in a customer's life-cycle with us.
What you'll do

  • Deliver work that spans all project phases, from concept and design through to production (this will range from sketches right through to production-ready assets)
  • Explore a variety of visual design directions in a rapid, iterative environment, incorporating feedback from the design team and wider stakeholders
  • Be a brand guardian and influence the application of our visual language whilst being an advocate for great design
  • Support ideation sessions and workshops to develop ideas that address both customer and business needs
  • Use your visual thinking to help team members across disciplines understand, frame and solve real business problems.
  • Partner closely with engineering teams and collaborate during the development process to get your solution into the hands of the user
  • Grow our Capital One Design System, Plastic, expanding our capabilities and pushing for consistency.

What we're looking for

  • A portfolio that exhibits your creative potential across a variety of platforms (eg. Mobile, web). We'd love to see examples of how you've creatively responded to a complex brief, or challenging user problem.
  • Experience in Figma.
  • Creative storytelling and illustration skills.
  • Proven expertise in UI and visual design, with pixel-level attention to detail. An eye for typography, colour, layout, and brand identity.
  • Experience working with interactive content (e.g. responsive layouts, mobile app, etc) and proficiency in creating production-ready artwork and assets.
  • Animation and interaction design experience is a plus.

Where and how you'll work
This is a permanent position and can be based in our Nottingham or London offices.
We have a hybrid working model which gives you flexibility to work from our offices and from home.
We're big on collaboration and connection, so you'll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Many of our associates have flexible working arrangements, and we're open to talking about an arrangement that works for you.
What's in it for you

  • Bring us all this - and you'll be well rewarded with a role contributing to the roadmap of an organisation committed to transformation
  • We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers)
  • Immediate access to our core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement and private medical insurance - with flexible benefits available including season-ticket loans, cycle to work scheme and enhanced parental leave
  • Open-plan workspaces and accessible facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms. In London, you can heighten your mood with a run on our rooftop running track or an espresso at the Workshop Coffee café

What you should know about how we recruit
We pride ourselves on hiring the best people, not the same people. Building diverse and inclusive teams is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. We want to work with top talent: whoever you are, whatever you look like, wherever you come from. We know it's about what you do, not just what you say. That's why we make our recruitment process fair and accessible. And we offer benefits that attract people at all ages and stages.
We also partner with organisations including the Women in Finance and Race At Work Charters, Stonewall and upReach to find people from every walk of life and help them thrive with us. We have a whole host of internal networks and support groups you could be involved in, to name a few:

  • REACH - Race Equality and Culture Heritage group focuses on representation, retention and engagement for associates from minority ethnic groups and allies
  • OutFront - to provide LGBTQ+ support for all associates
  • Mind Your Mind - signposting support and promoting positive mental wellbeing for all
  • Women in Tech - promoting an inclusive environment in tech
  • EmpowHER - network of female associates and allies focusing on developing future leaders, particularly for female talent in our industry
