The Opportunity:

As a UAV Systems Specialist, you will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and integration of multi-rotor and fixed-wing COTS UAS platforms. This role requires expertise in working with advanced materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum alloys, and fiberglass, along with integrating internal components, including avionics, propulsion systems, and sensors. You will ensure the structural integrity and functionality of UAV platforms while collaborating with engineers to build reliable systems.

This position is ideal for individuals with hands-on experience in UAV construction and component integration, who enjoy solving complex technical challenges in a controlled shop setting. The role demands strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently, ensuring all platforms meet design specifications and quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate, modify, program, and maintain multi-rotor and fixed-wing UAS platforms.
  • Install, operate, and tune small 2-stroke and 4-stroke internal combustion engines.
  • Perform pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks on UAS platforms.
  • Independently execute UAV builds and modifications, ensuring high-quality standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, pilots, and project managers to deliver effective UAV solutions.
  • Utilize advanced materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum alloys, and fiberglass in UAV construction.
  • Participate in all phases of UAS operations, from build to flight, in various environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to UAV performance, control systems, and propulsion systems.
  • Conduct safety checks and ensure compliance with operational standards and regulations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of flight plans and mission profiles.
  • Provide technical support during live training events and test missions.
  • Document and report test results, system performance, and necessary improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with COTS multi-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft, including hobbyist UAS experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Aerospace, Robotics, or a related technical field with 3 years of relevant experience; OR Associate Degree with 3+ years of hands-on experience in UAV systems, avionics, or aerospace applications; OR 5+ years of progressive experience in UAV fabrication, integration, and systems development in lieu of a degree.
  • Familiarity with UAV construction materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum alloys.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and experience in building/flying radio-controlled aircraft.
  • Hands-on experience with fiberglass and composite materials.
  • Strong knowledge of small internal combustion engines (2-stroke, 4-stroke).
  • Experience with RPVs (land, air, sea) and ability to work with limited instructions.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • A Secret clearance is the minimum requirement to begin employment. As a requirement of continued employment you will be required to obtain TS/SCI clearance.
  • Knowledge of avionics systems, flight control software, and autonomous flight modes.
  • Familiarity with regulatory guidelines for UAV operation (FAA Part 107 or equivalent).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and software issues.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow complex technical instructions.
  • Experience with programming UAV autopilot systems (e.g., Pixhawk, Ardupilot, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience with telemetry and sensor integration for UAV systems.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, or ability to obtain one within a specified time frame.
