A Brief Summary of This Position
The Mill Operator works under the direction of the Welding Supervisor but with minimal supervision and within the guidelines of established procedures. This position is responsible for producing quality tubing at a safe, reasonable rate of speed by operating the mill and welding tubing with a Electric Resistance Weld (ERW) process. The Mill Operator is also responsible for adjusting any one of a number of guide rolls, side rolls, forming rolls, driver rolls, and weld head rolls to make a quality product. The Mill Operator operates all machines in the department, including material handling equipment. They will be responsible for performing changeovers as well as fine tuning the mill after a changeover has been made. Responsibilities also include inspection of mill tooling and communicating/planning any maintenance issues that arise in the department. Maintaining good housekeeping in the area and exercising precautions for the safety of self and others is critical.
Essential Functions
- Operate mill to produce quality tubing per established specifications
- Inspect for substandard product due to bad steel, bad weld, bad form or anything else that would create a product that would cause customer service problems
- Perform frequent quality checks using tape measures, micrometers, O.D. and PI tapes
- Perform changeovers as required make necessary mill adjustments to ensure product quality
- Ability to perform basic math functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing including metrics
- Safely operate various other machines in the department, including material handling equipment
- Maintain a clean work area

- This position reports to the Production Supervisor and has no direct report
- Ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Minimum of 7 years of combined experience in manufacturing, welding & machine operating
- The ability to read and write legibly as well as understand simple blueprints
- Basic math skills (whole numbers, fractions, feet and inches, add, subtract, multiply and divide, including metrics)
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and able to frequently lift up to 35 lbs.
- Must be able to stand 95% of the shift and bend or stoop for up to 75% of the shift
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
- Previous steel roll forming experience
- An understanding of high frequency welding theory
