The Program

Maze Therapeutics offers a dynamic 9-week summer internship program designed to provide hands-on experience and professional growth opportunities. As an intern, you’ll take ownership of your own projects, gaining practical insights while learning from Maze employees. You will participate in several events and trainings with your fellow interns, including professional development workshops and discussions with Maze executive leaders. The program culminates with a company-wide presentation, where you’ll share your work and celebrate your achievements.

This immersive experience will give you insight into the biotechnology industry, expand your research skills, and help you grow professionally— all while contributing to Maze’s mission to develop precision medicines for patients.

The Position

The Translational Sciences team at Maze Therapeutics is seeking a Summer Intern to contribute to our efforts to advance biomarker discovery for chronic kidney disease (CKD).

As an intern, you’ll conduct cell biology experiments focusing on genes such as APOL1, SLC6A19, and others that play critical roles in kidney function and disease.  Your work will help us uncover molecular mechanisms underlying CKD and identify biomarkers that support future clinical development efforts.

At Maze, you’ll gain hands-on laboratory experience, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, and contribute to research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with CKD.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Translational Sciences and offers a supportive, dynamic learning environment.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Laboratory Research:
    • Perform experiments such as cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, qRT-PCR, Western blotting, and other biochemical assays to characterize biomarkers in cultured cell models relevant to CKD.
    • Contribute to method development and troubleshooting to refine experimental approaches.
    • Maintain thorough, organized records in an electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Data Generation, Analysis, and Interpretation:
    • Generate, analyze, and interpret experimental data in collaboration with team members to provide meaningful insights.
  • Communication and Presentation:
    • Create high-quality figures to visually represent your findings.
    • Present your progress, data, and interpretations in individual meetings with your manager and in group meetings.

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree and Experience:
    • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Cell or Molecular Biology, Translational Biology, or a related field
    • Prior hands-on experience in a laboratory setting (academic research, industry internships, or independent research projects)
  • Technical Skills:
    • Culturing mammalian cells
    • Performing assays such as ELISA, Western Blot, IF, RNA techniques
    • Maintaining detailed and organized experimental records
    • Familiarity with core concepts in molecular and cell biology
    • Clear understanding of standard laboratory workflows
  • Key Attributes:
    • Enthusiastic about learning new techniques and collaborating with peers
    • Curious and eager to design experiments to solve biological mysteries
    • A proactive communicator who seeks feedback and thrives in a team environment
  • Additional Considerations:
    • This is an on-site internship role based at Maze Therapeutics' headquarters.

About Maze Therapeutics

Maze Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company harnessing the power of human genetics to develop novel, small molecule precision medicines for patients living with renal, cardiovascular and related metabolic diseases, including obesity. The company is advancing a pipeline using its Compass platform, which allows it to identify and characterize genetic variants in disease and then link those variants to the biological pathways that drive disease in specific patient groups through a process it refers to as variant functionalization. The company’s pipeline is led by two wholly owned lead programs, MZE829 and MZE782, each of which represents a novel precision medicine-based approach for chronic kidney disease.  Maze is based in South San Francisco.

Our People

Maze is comprised of a team of passionate and creative professionals committed to discovering and delivering transformative medicines to patients suffering from both rare and common genetic diseases. We are fostering a culture that encourages vision, initiative and the development of talent. Our supportive work environment inspires creative thinking and freedom of expression, resulting in a stimulating atmosphere where people enjoy coming to work. While we have a passion for advanced science and pride ourselves on excellence in execution, ultimately, everything we do is about patients.
