POSITION: Coatings Process Engineer 

PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

  • To be a primary process engineer for Gentex’s vacuum coating processes in large area coating. 

  • To drive new ideas, designs and builds of coating equipment and processes that will help improve product quality, process efficiency and capacity footprint 

  • Lead the effort in setting the direction for coating process development from new equipment designs to current manufacturing. 

  • Find new and innovative solutions to help keep one of Gentex’s core manufacturing competencies up to date with state-of-the-art technologies.  

  • Contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of the next generation high efficiency EC production lines. 

  • Ultimately unlock process potential in production to drive out cost in the bill of materials or alleviate labor by process improvements 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead the continuous improvement of processes that impact every EC mirror produced at Gentex. 

  • Evaluate current process capabilities, recommend opportunities for process improvement, and implement process innovations 

  • Develop new processes, which will improve the quality of the product and increases production efficiency. 

  • Take part in product design initiatives and quoting activity for new products. 

  • Research and purchase equipment for new processes as well as for improving existing processes. 

  • Lead new equipment designs as the primary project resource, supporting concept generation and design through build, debug, and launch 

  • Lead continuous improvement and VA/VE projects 

  • Reduce variation in the processes through the analysis of process data 

  • Be a resource for problem solving activities on the production floor to resolve quality issues, line rejects, and PPM 

  • Support troubleshooting activities with tools such as Is/Is not, Fishbones, 8D and 5 Whys. 

  • Aid in launching coating stacks from R&D to production. 

  • Collaborate within the organization to help achieve goals and create trusting relationships 

 

POSITION DEMANDS: 

  • 4-year college degree in an engineering field 

  • Experience in mechanical design and proficient in SolidWorks 

  • Experience in electrical schematics using AutoCAD or SolidWorks electrical 

  • Ability to understand, modify and troubleshoot PLC programs and other programing platforms. 

  • Desirable to have experience using Allen Bradley, Beckhoff, or Siemens 

  • Experience working with statistical software platforms such as Minitab 

  • Experience conducting experiments, hypothesis testing, and capability analyses to benchmark improvements. 

  • Work schedule must be suitable for production and critical project needs 

  • Some travel required for vendor visits and training as needed 

  • Analyze and document experimental data to provide a basis for decision making
