As a Staff Test Engineer, you will be a key technical leader driving test strategy, development, and optimization across wafer-level, die-level, and module-level optical semiconductor testing. You will work closely with R&D, manufacturing, product engineering, and reliability teams to develop advanced test methodologies, ensuring high performance, quality, and yield optimization in high-volume production.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and develop test strategies for on-wafer, optical, and module-level testing of semiconductor devices (lasers, modulators, detectors…), photonics ICs, and optical modules.
- Design and optimize automated test setups, software, and hardware to improve test coverage, efficiency, and throughput.
- Lead the development of optical, electrical, and RF test methodologies for high-performance photonic devices.
- Collaborate with R&D, product engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure test solutions are scalable and robust.
- Drive data analysis, yield improvement, and failure analysis using statistical tools and AI-driven insights.
- Identify and implement cost-reduction initiatives, including test time optimization and parallel testing strategies.
- Evaluate and qualify test instrumentation, probe stations, and automation platforms for high-precision optical and electrical measurements.
- Ensure compliance with quality and reliability standards (ISO, Telcordia, and other industry specifications).
- Work with global teams to transfer and scale test solutions across different manufacturing sites.
- Expect to spend up to 10% of time on other Lumentum sites
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s, or PhD in Electronic Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in test engineering within semiconductor, photonics, or optical module industries.
- Strong expertise in optical and electrical test methodologies, including semiconductor characterization and RF performance analysis.
- Hands-on experience with automated test equipment (ATE), probe stations, and optical measurement systems.
- Proficiency in C# or other test automation software and understanding of protocols such as GPIB, RS232, Ethernet.
- Experience in statistical analysis and data-driven decision-making (JMP, Minitab, or similar).
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a track record of improving test yield, efficiency, and reliability.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities, with a proactive approach to cross-functional collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of semiconductor laser diodes, photonics ICs, and semiconductor test-level process flows.
- Experience with machine learning applications in test engineering.
- Knowledge of high-speed optical communications testing.
- Understanding of telecom and datacom optical standards (ITU, IEEE, Telcordia).
- Familiarity with manufacturing and high-volume test automation for optical components.
