At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.
The software-focused propulsion test engineer is responsible for maintaining and optimizing our current software environments as well as developing our next generation of test equipment software. This role provides the opportunity to support propulsion system testing through software solutions. Engineers with a background or interest in aviation may also have the chance to participate in propulsion-focused flight tests. This is an exciting opportunity to help us revolutionize flight and we promise a fast-paced environment with a lot of fun times.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
- Develop and maintain software tools for propulsion test automation using MATLAB, Simulink, Python, and Labview
- Enhance and optimize existing test systems, focusing on improving data collection, analysis, and reporting efficiency
- Implement best practices for version control (e.g., Git, SVN) to ensure robust software development and team collaboration
- Design and implement efficient data transfer mechanisms for large-scale test data, ensuring secure, reliable storage and easy access for analysis
- Build cool things! We are all passionate makers and builders
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in Engineering or equivalent experience and evidence of exceptional ability
- Experience with common communication protocols (e.g.CAN, RS422, TCP/IP, UDP) and wireless communication technologies (e.g. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth)
- Proficient with Matlab, Labview, Python or other data acquisition and analysis software
- Experience with version control software (eg. GIT, SVN)
- Experience with time synchronization protocols (eg. PTP, NTP, PPS)
- Well organized, communicative, disciplined team player with strong attention to detail. Ability to work with minimal supervision and identify strategies to remove roadblocks is paramount. Mental flexibility and the ability to change direction based on new information is an absolute must in our fast paced environment
- Familiarity with Google G-Suite including drive, mail, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, charts, hangouts; Slack, application lifecycle
Above and Beyond Qualifications that will distinguish you:
- Electric motor component/system testing experience
- Familiar with testing equipment such as, digital signal generator, oscilloscopes, load cells, torque cells, thermocouples, air speed sensors, accelerometers and other instrumentation.
- Rotating machinery testing experience
- Aerospace certification testing
- Experience creating analytical and numerical models of mechanical, thermal or electrical systems
- Working knowledge of high voltage equipment, electric drives and motors
- Working knowledge of heat transfer and thermal management
- Ability to understand component & assembly drawings and perform basic inspection of components for troubleshooting purposes with inspection instruments / gauges
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position requires handling motors and inverters using cranes and other lifting equipment. It also requires climbing on propeller stands using proper safety equipment to inspect the equipment.
Test engineers must be aware of the acoustic properties of motors and good hearing is required. Good vision is also required to inspect components. The test engineers frequently are required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
Test engineers will work around high voltages and must be able to work safely in that environment. Some of the testing is conducted outside the ability to work at those extreme temperatures is required.
Test programs sometimes require the test engineers to be present during night testing, or participate in atypical work schedules.
Additionally, as magnets are used throughout the equipment, it is important that candidates are not affected by strong magnetic fields (e.g., individuals with pacemakers or similar medical devices should be aware of potential safety concerns).
Build electric airplanes with us!
We encourage all driven candidates to apply, even if they do not meet every listed qualification.

What We Do
BETA Technologies is creating an electric transportation ecosystem that’s safe, reliable and sustainable. A relentlessly focused team is building an extensive charging infrastructure and ALIA, the world’s most technologically advanced electric vertical aircraft (EVA).
BETA’s platform and products are strikingly simple. Prioritization of safety and a pragmatic approach to certification drive elegant redundancy, appropriate diversity of implementation and simplicity of control. ALIA’s fixed-pitch propellers and centrally located batteries make it an inherently stable aircraft that is safe to fly and easy to maneuver.
