The Role

We are looking for a Technical Writer to join the Documentation & Training Team at ThreatConnect. Are you a “grammar nerd”? Are you looking for an opportunity to start building a career in technical writing? Are you a detail-oriented person with a learning mindset? Are you interested in being part of a small, but energetic, team supporting a product that assists major companies all over the world in protecting themselves from growing cyberthreats…all while working from wherever you want? Then keep reading!

Job descriptions are, by nature, extremely specific. While it may seem like we’re looking for a very specific candidate, we encourage you to apply if you are passionate about education through writing, love using language as a tool, and enjoy developing and executing strategies to solve challenges.

About The Job

The ThreatConnect® platform is multifaceted and complex. Documentation of its features and functionalities is essential to ensuring that customers can accomplish their use cases and quickly find answers to their questions. Accurate, up-to-date documentation also provides internal stakeholders with the information they need when planning or creating new features and working with prospects and customers.

The position will report to the Director of Documentation & Training and will update, maintain, and administrate ThreatConnect’s body of documentation, including a knowledge base, technical guides, integrations guides, API documentation, and more. The right candidate will bring the following:

  • A strong command of oral and written English, particularly in academic or professional style
  • Ability to learn and master new technologies and applications
  • Communication skills for collaborating with team members, subject-matter experts, and stakeholders in other departments
  • Research and problem-solving skills for learning and adapting quickly to changes in a fast-paced software release environment

About You

  • You are a strong writer and love language. You really enjoy writing and feel that it’s one of your greatest strengths. Now you are ready to take the next step by starting a career in which you use writing as an instructional tool and receive guidance and constructive criticism to help you hone your craft.
  • You have some experience with documentation and publication technologies. You have worked with some word processing, image editing, or web publishing tools in your personal, academic, or professional life.
  • You enjoy a good challenge. In fact, challenges excite you, because they provide an opportunity to create something new and amazing. You see challenges as a puzzle or mystery to be solved, and experimenting until you find the best solution is a fun journey!
  • You love the details, but also keep sight of the big picture. You have a passion for making sure that you’ve gotten everything right, but you know how to balance that drive with the grand plan so that you don’t get bogged down in the details.
  • You are tech savvy and love learning new things. You may not initially understand the material you are adapting into documentation or the tools you are using, but that doesn’t scare you. You feel comfortable researching, experimenting, and asking for help when you need it.
  • You are collaborative. You believe that working and communicating with others is essential to developing the best product possible. You are positive and open and enjoy contributing, and you are not afraid to ask questions.

In this role you’ll get to...

  • Write, update, and publish knowledge base articles for a cybersecurity Software as a Service (SaaS) platform.
  • Test and document platform features.
  • Collaborate with a small team to prioritize tasks and set achievable goals.
  • Work closely with subject-matter experts and other employees across multiple teams and disciplines to resolve questions, provide solutions, and accomplish mutual goals.
  • Shape and execute strategy for long-term documentation improvement projects.

In the first month we’ll expect you to…

  • Get onboarded and train with your supervisor and teammates.
  • Become familiar with the team’s tools, technology, and processes.
  • Understand the mission and products of the Documentation and Training Team.
  • Learn the basic functionalities of the ThreatConnect platform by reading documentation, experimenting with internal platform accounts, and receiving instructions from your supervisor and teammates.
  • Become acquainted with the company structure and the internal stakeholders with whom you will be collaborating.
  • Understand the ThreatConnect product release cycle and how it drives documentation goals and processes
  • With guidance, make and publish minor updates to Knowledge Base articles.

At 3 months we’ll expect you to…

  • Understand, navigate, and use the ThreatConnect platform at a basic level.
  • Use clearly stated directives to make and publish simple documentation updates.
  • Follow all standard operating procedures for the execution and administration of all documentation updates.
  • Show progress and development by applying feedback to subsequent assignments.
  • Begin to understand how directives for documentation updates are generated from product feature tickets, design documents, and training demos.
  • Work on documentation improvement projects unrelated to core-release needs.
  • Be a full participant in the team’s monthly planning meetings by helping prioritize tasks and projects.
  • Be a full participant in product demos, cross-departmental, and other company meetings.

At 6 months we’ll expect you to…

  • Understand and navigate the ThreatConnect platform at an advanced beginner or intermediate level.
  • Test platform features for documentation and identify and document bugs and problematic behavior.
  • Begin to use product feature tickets, design documents, and training demos to create and execute your own documentation update directives for medium- and low-priority documentation needs.
  • Edit and peer-review other team members’ work.

At 12 months we’ll expect you to…

  • Be a full and independent participant in core release documentation planning and updates.
  • Navigate the ThreatConnect platform at a high-intermediate level.
  • Plan and execute intermediate-level documentation updates.
  • Have a strong familiarity with the body of ThreatConnect documentation.
  • Generate your own long-term plans for documentation improvement.
  • Set professional-growth goals for the next year.

About The Team

  • This role is part of the Documentation & Training Team. We are a very small and fully remote team with members located on the East Coast of the United States (but you do not have to be in this time zone).
  • We operate flexibly. We trust each other to meet or exceed expectations with minimal oversight, and we strive to be trustworthy by taking ownership of our tasks and producing high-quality results.
  • We communicate frequently via Slack and Google Meet. In a remote company, maintaining strong lines of communication builds a sense of community and camaraderie. In addition, regular communication serves as an early intervention in times of confusion and promotes collaboration and quick resolutions to questions and concerns. Our team holds a weekly sync, but we also meet periodically to set up project plans and touch base on ongoing initiatives, and we participate in meetings with other teams to communicate on shared work and resolve questions
  • We have a very relaxed and friendly team culture. We believe that when you feel happy, balanced, trusted, and challenged, you will do your best and enjoy your role.

Required Skills

  • Excellent command of oral and written English
  • Professional or academic experience with writing, editing, or publishing
  • Proficiency with word processing applications such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs
  • Experience with using and administrating knowledge base or other web publishing software
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Ability to think creatively, especially when dealing with challenging or complex situations
  • Ability to learn complex systems and devise and implement accurate and thorough documentation and instructions about these systems
  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and ask questions when uncertain
  • 1–2 years of work experience as a technical writer, preferably in the technology industry or a related field
  • Knowledge of basic CSS, HTML, or JavaScript
  • Experience working with APIs or in a docs-as-code environment

Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with cybersecurity or software engineering
  • Experience with instructional design, UX design, e-learning, or content authoring
  • Teaching, grant writing, or scientific publishing experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, writing, communications, instructional design, software/computer engineering, or other relevant field
