Job Description:

The Mainframe Technical Documentation's Engineering Program Manager is responsible for identifying, continuously validating, and managing content improvement, innovation, and currency opportunities aligned to Broadcom’s Mainframe Software Division (MSD) Business Objectives and the Technical Documentation Content Strategy. In doing so, the Engineering Program Manager functions as a user advocate while also serving as the conduit between end users and the technical documentation team. This position does not have direct reports and is not supervisory, rather manages projects and reports to the Head of Technical Documentation to run projects that span across all mainframe software product documentation as visible on Techdocs.broadcom.com. The Technical Documentation leadership team, including the Engineering Program Manager, is responsible for ensuring that Mainframe Software Division content provides a consistent, accurate,  intuitive, and productive user experience, thus maximizing product adoption and retention. This role partners with global managers in mainframe documentation development to facilitate and support information engineers and technical writers on user-centered content quality and authoring initiatives, including testing and hardening existing technical content with customers and devising new content based on end customer UX and POV on product documentation.

Core Responsibilities

  • Research: Engage with users and product teams on a regular basis to understand their needs and product usage, strengthen our partnership with them, and stay informed on industry trends. Monitor MSD content analytics to measure the effectiveness of documentation and to identify trends and enhancement opportunities.

  • Plan: Manage the MSD content roadmap that includes all prioritized requirements, including the Rally-Agile artifacts and milestones to complete the work.

  • Build: Partner with strategic MSD peers to highlight content improvements and integrations at internal and external events, including conferences, workshops, webinars, and other user engagement opportunities.

  • Collaborate: Work closely with Technical Documentation leadership and value stream leaders to identify pain points or new innovation/currency ideas to improve content.

  • Execute: Continue to drive positive installation, configuration, upgrade, deployment, and maintenance experiences with a doc-first approach while also considering ways to improve the related code, download, and overall user experience.

  • Integrate: Work cross-functionally to build and own the strategy for any division-wide integration content. For example, with Zowe.

  • Coach: Mentor peers and other junior team members regarding content, design, and technology in accordance with the MSD Technical Documentation Definition of Done. Embrace the feedback of others to create a two-way learning dynamic. 

Program Management

  • Conduct continuous industry research and competitive analysis to ensure that MSD content is aligned with end user needs and industry innovation.

  • Plan and manage the documentation lifecycle for division-wide improvements and currency activities, from conceptualization and drafts to revisions and final delivery.

  • Build user insights into all stages of planning and execution, ensuring the continuous validation of features and stories with users.

  • Own Rally-Agile epics to define scope and acceptance criteria.

  • Monitor and report to key stakeholders regarding the progress of content-centric initiatives.

  • Explore content opportunities in techdocs.broadcom.com as well as any other appropriate MSD channel.


Continuous Planning

  • Build appropriate Rally-Agile artifacts for product backlogs or for the Tech Currency/Tech Debt backlog.

  • Leveraging the Tech Doc leadership team and cross-value stream leaders, own the continuing planning process, including preparation and presentation of materials critical to the release planning, execution, and validation process.

  • Communicate current business context, including milestones and significant external dependencies.

  • Ensure that MSD technical documentation templates and best practices remain current.


Risk Management

  • Identify and define potential risks early in the development lifecycle. 

  • Drive content improvement and currency work with a focus on scope management, quality, deployment options, and timely delivery.

  • Adjust the process, business, and technical scope based on staffing, research, testing, and evolving end user input. 


Role Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, UX, Technical Documentation, Information Architecture, or similar related BS or BA at minimum.

  • 8+ years working in a technical development or leadership role.

  • Thorough understanding of the mainframe software ecosystem and the challenges of integrating legacy systems with modern applications.

  • Proven track record working with users to identify pain points, challenges, and needs; working with those same users to implement those solutions.

  • Strong technical acumen with a proven ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts to a diverse audience.

  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • This is an in-office full time position, remote-only applicants need not apply.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position is $107,000 - $171,000

This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
