Zoox is on an ambitious journey to develop a full-stack autonomous mobility solution for cities. Zoox’s System Design and Mission Assurance (SDMA) team is responsible for constructing the safety case and validating that our vehicles are safe enough to be deployed for autonomous driving. We play a foundational role for the success of the company. As Zoox launches our technology on public roads, we are seeking an experienced systems engineer who can bring the system safety engineering discipline to field operations, ensuring safe deployment and continuous operations of Zoox technology.
In this role, you will
- Proactively identify potential safety hazards in Zoox’s operations of autonomous driving through structured predictive safety analysis and review of historical operational data
- Develop requirements related to operational software, tooling, and human systems interfaces
- Lead systems safety initiatives to develop prevention and mitigation strategies that can minimize potential safety issues during operations and service, in close collaboration with cross-functional teams including engineering, operations, legal, safety policy, manufacturing, etc. These safety mitigation strategies could include engineering solutions in hardware and software, as well as operational mitigations and process improvements
- Be the point of contact for SDMA for cross-functional collaborations with other stakeholders (Perception, Planner, Firmware, Vehicle Engineering, Advance Hardware Engineering, Teleguidance, etc) as well as SDMA tech lead working with various subteams such as functional safety, operational safety, autonomy validation, quantitative risk analysis)
- Author validation clearance report to support safety clearance
Qualifications
- BS degree in a relevant engineering field
- Have minimally 7-9 years of working level experience and 3+ years related to the safe operation of complex engineering systems.
- Systems engineering and system safety experience
- Experience in identifying and mitigating issues in real-world operations and service
- Experience in operation systems and human systems interfaces
- Proficiency in statistics and quantitative risk assessment
- Possesses excellent EQ with an empathetic communication style that fosters connection, collaboration, and motivation
- Track-record in leading and managing complex cross-functional projects
- Familiarity with structured safety analysis methodologies, such as STPA, FTA, FMEA, etc.
Bonus Qualifications
- Have senior leadership experience (8+ years) with complex field operations in relevant domains
- Working experience in automotive industry or the autonomous driving technology industry
- Solid understanding of software architecture principles and design patterns
- Experience in developing operational tools/features and human factors study
- Experience in distributed systems, telemetry, or cloud platforms
- Working level experience with safety critical systems
- Familiarity with industry safety standards such as MIL-STD-882, ISO 26262, ISO 21448, etc.
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $166,000 to $286,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
