SUMMARY

IT Infrastructure & Systems Administration work focuses on the design, installation, administration, and optimization of the companies storage and compute environment and servers, e.g., Windows, UNIX, Macintosh, LINUX, AIX, Citrix, Solaris, etc., and related components to achieve high performance of the various business applications. The System Engineer II applies practical knowledge of job area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensures the availability of client/server applications, configures all new implementations, and develops processes/procedures for ongoing management of the server environment.
  • Handles access issues and assists in overseeing the physical security, integrity, and safety of the data center/server farm.
  • Monitors and addresses issues with server resources, in addition to assisting in capacity planning.
  • Monitors storage use/resources and troubleshoots storage-related issues
  • Meeting end-user needs by ensuring the uptime, performance, resource availability, and security of the networks managed within established budgets and operational guidelines.
  • Determining and diagramming the physical layout which illustrates the physical location of and the connections between devices participating on the network.
  • Determining and diagramming the logical layout which documents the communication protocols (e.g., IP, TCP, POP3, etc.) and type of service/application (email, file transfer, web browsing, etc.) for each segment of the network.
  • Automating routine tasks using scripting and writing basic computer programs to address more complex systems software configuration and enhancement.
  • Works independently with general supervision.
  • Problems faced are difficult but typically not complex.
  • May influence others within the job area through explanation of facts, policies, and practices

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
