Vast is looking for an Environmental Health and Safety Intern to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations. You’ll work alongside seasoned professionals who are eager to share thriller expertise, guiding you through hands-on projects. This is a full-time 12-week Summer internship at our headquarters in Long Beach, CA.
During the internship, you may gain experience in the following areas:
- Apply knowledge of environmental, health & safety regulations to evaluate facility projects, process changes, and assist other teammates in defining compliance requirements for processes and equipment.
- Training and Awareness: support the development and delivery of safety training programs and help raise awareness of EHS policies among internal customers.
- Incident Response: Respond to and participate in the investigation of industrial accidents and injuries to determine root cause and preventive measures.
- Control of Hazardous Energy (LOTO) program management to include working with internal customers and writing procedures.
- Conduct Safety Audits to identify workplace hazards/implement engineering controls and best management practices.
- Provide Key Performance Indicators (KPI) using safety audit data to track trends across the company.
- Collaborate with department leadership to complete Job Hazard Analysis and PPE determination based on tasks/processes.
- Review and interpret new and proposed environmental and or safety laws and regulations, and provide guidance to management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Qualified candidates must be enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s degree program from an accredited college or university in Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering; Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or a related discipline.
- Ability to work full-time on-site.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying and documenting federal, state and local environmental, health & safety regulations.
- Proven background in developing and implementing health and safety training modules.
- Highly detail-oriented and experienced working with cross-functional teams and external customers.
- Proficiency in utilizing Windows operating systems and Google applications (including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook).
- Demonstrated commitment to hands-on work and meticulous attention to detail, either through academic pursuits or professional experiences.
- Adept at managing multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities, and successfully completing projects with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational abilities and excellent communication skills are a fundamental requirement.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding start-up atmosphere.
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted.
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, between Long Beach, Hawthorne, and Mojave offices.
Pay Range:
- $33/hr (Bachelor’s)
- $38/hr (Master’s)

Base salary will vary depending on job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, business needs, and market demand. Salary is just one component of our comprehensive compensation package.
