Staff Software Engineer, Data (Backend)

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our New York-based Data team. The Data team tackles interesting problems that span a wide range of technical challenges in data storage, database optimization, data querying, API design, UI/UX, and more.

You will have the opportunity to create solutions that make it seamless for a user to get data from a device and use that data to do something really interesting. The current tech stack consists of Golang, MongoDB, GCP, Azure, and gRPC.

In this role, you will:

  • Work on performant, reliable systems that allow our users to capture large amounts of data from their smart machines, sync it to our cloud service, and query it.
  • Design and implement data processing and querying systems, and developer-friendly APIs.
  • Collaborate across other teams and mentor other engineers.
  • Improve the experience of the data developer.
  • Analyze performance and scale challenges and solve them.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience designing and building systems for processing, analyzing, and querying data. Bonus points if you have built such a system from the early stages, or the ground up.
  • Has an affinity for turning product requirements into straightforward, high-quality, well-tested software.
  • Is excited to work as a team to refine and execute the Data team’s vision.
  • Has software engineering experience using languages such as Golang, C/C++, Java, or Python.

Benefits:

  • 100% covered medical/dental/vision insurance plans
  • Competitive salary & equity packages (see below)
  • Reproductive Health Benefits including Fertility Benefits and Abortion Access Travel Benefits
  • 25 days paid vacation and generous holiday observances
  • One Medical Membership
  • Citi Bike memberships
  • Commuter benefits
  • Monthly wellness stipend to be used for a variety of fitness-related items like gym memberships, fitness classes, fitness equipment, apparel, and more
  • Free lunch everyday that you’re in the office
  • Paid parental leave

The starting salary for this role is between $235,000 - $259,000/year. Your exact offer will vary based on a number of factors including experience level, skillset, market location, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. We recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced, or more senior, than this job description as posted. In these situations, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate. In addition to cash compensation, Viam offers a comprehensive Total Rewards package that includes equity grants, health benefits, and more.

What We Do

Robotics has the potential to do so much good, but progress has been slowed by complicated hardware and software integrations, long development cycles, and people's fear of tripping over a robot on their way to work.

At Viam, we’re addressing these issues by building a novel robotics platform that relies on standardized building blocks rather than custom code to create, configure and control robots quickly and intuitively. We’re empowering engineers - aspiring and experienced - across industries to solve complicated automation problems with our innovative and developer-friendly software tools.
