TITLE:  Staff, Design Engineer - Automation

POSITION SUMMARY: This non-managerial roll is part hands on design and part leadership.  You will be responsible driving strategy, execution, and development of manufacturing automation system design.  Having a strong background in robotics, mechatronics, and manufacturing automation, you’ll partner with a small team of engineers to understand current manufacturing processes and develop creative custom strategies to improve yields and throughput for complex flexible endoscopes.  Neptune is breaking technology barriers and using composite materials in ways never before seen, and we need you to take us to the next level.

The ideal candidate will act with passion and intensity in a medical device start-up that is fast-paced and collaborative and will display the ability to perform to the requirements outlined below. For the right person, this position will be a tremendously exciting and career-defining opportunity, making core contributions to a genuinely new type of medical robotic platform.

ESSENTIAL CANDIDATE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • As a hands-on engineer, invent, design, build, test and iterate complex electro-mechanical automation tools to address the manufacturing challenges of producing flexible composite devices in a startup environment.
  • Develop manufacturing automation methods & custom electro-mechanical equipment that is characterized, repeatable, and produce high yielding product across a variety of processes.
  • Create and maintain Solidworks CAD models for new designs, define specifications and create detailed drawings per good GD&T.
  • Using OTS stepper motors and PLC control systems, develop and implement custom algorithms to control coordinated robotic automation steps.
  • Lead/participate in technical design reviews. Present design inputs, design outputs and open issues.
  • Lead cross functional collaboration between design teams and manufacturing to balance the needs of ‘now’ while progressing toward the future of automation at a rapid pace.
  • Work with design and manufacturing engineers & leadership to create an automation roadmap for various stages of the manufacturing process.
  • Work closely with colleagues to brainstorm, collaborate, and share knowledge, demonstrating a team forward mentality with honest work ethic.

 THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical or Electromechanical Engineering with 8+ years experience. Related degrees are acceptable, but you should be able to convince us that you are very competent in mechanical & electromechanical design.
  • Demonstrated experience in manufacturing - specifically braiding, coiling, coextrusion, insert molding, ultrasonics, laminating, heat staking, die bonding, welding, laser joining and cutting etc...
  • Proven experience designing and building electromechanical & mechanical mechanisms and assemblies
  • Experience using off-the-shelf stepper motors with PLC control to perform coordinated closed loop control on multi degree-of-freedom systems.
  • Experience working with robotics & designing for manufacturing automation.
  • Demonstrated experience taking manufacturing assemblies from skilled craftsmanship to automated manufacturing through definition, procurement, design and installation of automation equipment.
