As a Sr Bioinformatics Field Bioinformatician & Applications Scientist, you will play a leading role in providing & developing consulting and support services for Illumina’s Bioinformatics & Data-Analysis solutions.
The Field Bioinformatician & Applications Scientist partners with customers to provide technical training, troubleshooting, and complaint resolution. This position serves as a scientific consultant during pre- and post-sales activities and will collaborate with broader commercial team to maximize sales growth and customer satisfaction.
This role requires troubleshooting, communication, time management, situational awareness, poise under pressure, and collaboration. You will be expected to build and maintain strong relationships across territory Service and Support teams, Marketing, Sales, Customer Service, and Quality organizations.
The role is field based and covers the Mediterranean Sub-Region.The candidate will be based in Italy or Spain.
Responsibilities:
- Train customers on the full range of Illumina's Bioinformatics portfolio
- Provide pre-sales consultation to customers in collaboration with Sales and Sales Specialists
- Independently troubleshoot customer complaints related to Illumina's bioinformatics portfolio.
- Conduct demonstrations and evaluations of tertiary software analysis tools to assess software effectiveness and suitability to customer projects.
- Oversee and project-manage implementation of complete bioinformatics and data-analysis solutions comprising Illumina products and potentially other components at customer sites.
- Liaising with customers and colleagues to ensure customer success while identifying, reporting & implementing solutions to challenges encountered.
- Playing a leading role in promoting the use of Illumina software and data-solutions and interacting with Sales, Marketing and development teams to feedback user experience
- Provide second level and elevation support to frontline support teams on complex bioinformatics-related issues related to the Illumina bioinformatics portfolio
- Playing an integral role in the development of key group processes that support our mission of building and maintaining our world-class support organization.
- Contribute to developing and delivering training to customers and internal teams in conjunction with the Commercial Training group
- Contribute as a leader and representative for the team and the company on internal and customer projects, including early access programs with key opinion leaders
- Conduct on-site customer trainings on cornerstone Illumina, Next-Generation Sequencing, library preparation, bioinformatics, consumables, or related products.
- Availability for Field travel required (up to 70%)

Preferred Requirements:
- Several years of commercial biotech/biomedical science industry experience preferred
- Several years of direct experience with high-throughput NGS and other genomic data analysis; in-depth understanding of NGS analysis tools and algorithms and their implementation on high-performance, scientific compute hardware systems
- Significant experience with current sequence-alignment, variant-calling and interpretation tools and concepts. Also data management tools & compute platforms
- Linux command line familiarity, ideally with experience in a scripting language such as Python.
- Proficient with general lab best practices and common Molecular Biology techniques.
- Highly self-motivated with strong analytical and problem solving ability, excellent presentation, verbal, written & communications skills
- Production bioinformatics or customer support experience preferred
- Project management experience an advantage
- Strong ability to work cross-functionally within a global organization and matrix reporting structure
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- Clear vision of, and commitment to, providing outstanding customer service
- Fluent in English, Italian and/or Spanish

Preferred Educational Background:
- PhD or MSc in Bioinformatics with strong background in Molecular Biology/Genetics and/or Computer Science or a related degree
