About the role
At Betterment, the Growth teams drive the funnel for investors across all our product lines, including retail, Betterment Advisor Solutions (BAS), and Betterment for Business (B4B).
We drive business growth by optimizing user acquisition, streamlining marketing enablement, delivering targeted in-app messaging, and improving account activation.
As we continue to invest in expanding our business, we are growing our teams to maintain a strong, sustained focus on these key areas to accelerate user acquisition. We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Growth area. In this role, you’ll work closely with product management and cross-functional teams to define a mission-driven roadmap and oversee its successful execution.
In partnership with engineers and engineering managers within the team, you’ll help shape and deliver technical strategies to accelerate our business growth. Your impact will be pivotal in driving the roadmap’s success, collaborating with recruiting to build a high-performing team, and working with stakeholders across the organization to deliver key solutions that drive Betterment’s growth. This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $200,000 - $228,000

A day in the life
- Lead, grow, and manage a team of full-stack engineers to develop innovative technology that attracts and retains users on the Betterment platform.
- Build and lead a high-performing team, while mentoring and guiding other leaders within the growth area.
- Develop in-depth expertise in the domain to enhance team collaboration and effectively engage with stakeholders across the organization.
- Foster a team culture that emphasizes engineering excellence, customer satisfaction, and accountability in all projects.
- Drive the career development of your team by aligning roadmap initiatives with the professional growth goals of your direct reports.
- Implement agile engineering practices that ensure your team delivers high-quality, scalable solutions to market quickly.
- Create an environment of open communication and innovative problem-solving, empowering engineers to propose and execute ideas that contribute to company objectives.
What we’re looking for
- Extensive experience in object-oriented programming, preferably Ruby on Rails, with strong architectural and technical leadership. Familiarity with React, GraphQL, or mobile engineering is a plus.
- Proven experience in managing, mentoring, and inspiring a diverse team of engineers, staff engineers, and engineering managers.
- Ability to balance hands-on contributions with leadership, actively working alongside your engineering team while guiding and supporting managers within your area.
- Proven track record of delivering high-quality, production-grade software with a focus on accuracy, reliability, and performance in an agile environment.
- Strong collaboration skills, with experience working alongside engineering teams, product managers, subject matter experts, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Skilled at making informed decisions while managing stakeholders in a fast-evolving product landscape.
- A solid track record of hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers, while consistently maintaining high performance standards.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and keep projects on track.

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.
On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
