As the Senior Accountant,, you will play a vital role in strengthening our accounting operations and supporting the Company’s growth. This role offers an opportunity to drive continuous improvements in core accounting processes, contribute to operational accuracy, and support strategic initiatives across the business. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally, support audit readiness, and help scale accounting operations in a high-growth environment.
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus
Time Zone Requirements - Central or Pacific Time Zone are preferred
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per Quarter at the Upstart office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Support the preparation of accurate, timely journal entries and account activity
- Perform monthly and quarterly balance sheet account reconciliations and general ledger maintenance
- Analyze account activity to identify discrepancies and recommend solutions
- Assist with the development and management of accounting policies and procedures
- Support the external audit process by preparing PBCs, responding to inquiries, and resolving open items
- Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and automation to increase accuracy and efficiency
- Partner with cross-functional teams to support business initiatives and implement scalable accounting solutions
- Assist in the design, implementation, and testing of internal controls
- Participate in ad-hoc projects and strategic initiatives across the Finance organization
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of relevant experience in public accounting and/or corporate accounting roles
- Strong understanding of financial statements and U.S. GAAP
- Proficiency with Excel (e.g., vlookup, sumif, pivot tables, etc.)
- Detail-oriented, analytical mindset with the ability to think strategically and see the big picture
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Collaborative and solutions-oriented mindset with a continuous improvement approach
- Preferred qualifications:
- CPA license or equivalent experience
- Experience in the fintech or financial services industry
- Familiarity with NetSuite, FloQast, and Google Workspace
- Experience with cloud-based accounting or reporting platforms
At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

$82,000—$110,000 USD
