Job Description 

The Specialist, Infrastructure Services will be responsible for the design and maintenance of Extendicare and Paramed’s site technologies in conjunction with the design and maintenance of the Windows Active Directory, Azure Cloud and Data Centre environments. The individual will work closely with the Systems Infrastructure Services team to help actively design and maintain all the Infrastructure portfolio solutions including compute, telephony, and site security across all environments.  The applicant will bring strong technical acumen to help design/implement solutions to then promote into production.  This role will also be available for Engineering level support, should it be required. The role will report to the Manager of IT Infrastructure.  

The role is responsible for all aspects of Extendicare’s cloud and on premise infrastructure with a strong focus on standardization of processes and technology to drive operational efficiency, scalability and security.

This role is based at our Markham Head Office and offers a hybrid work model.

 As the Infrastructure Systems Engineer, Information Technology you will:  

  • Have hands-on design, implementation, configuration, and maintenance of private and cloud-based environments, to include Windows Server, VMware vSphere & Microsoft 365, Power & Azure environments, as well as recommend solutions to meet other existing and future requirements while remaining compliant with the required security standards. 

  • Have the ability to design and plan CCTV deployments.

  • Have the ability to design, implement, configure and monitor virtual servers 

  • Have the ability to design, implement, configure and monitor services and virtualized environments within Microsoft Azure 

  • Have the ability to design, implement, configure and monitor telephony solutions including analog and digital phone services 

  • Have the ability to design, implement, configure and monitor on site security systems & camera systems, with connectivity to monitoring stations through IP and POTS.  Working with vendors to implement and support these solutions, allowing for remote connectivity for those vendors into the environment. 

  • Have the ability to design, implement, configure and monitor nurse call systems, working with vendors for implementation and support. 

  • Have demonstrated the ability to manage partner vendors and MSPs from design through implementation and promotion to production and subsequent support. 

  • Effectively utilize current monitoring and alerting tools and implement future central monitoring, alerts and configuration solutions. 

  • Provides expert-level support and technical mentoring to internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Act as an escalation point for 2nd level support teams. 

  • Participate in the review and evolution of the current and future state of the systems infrastructure. 

  • Participate in the patching/hardening practices of all Infrastructure systems 

  • Ensure all deployed systems solutions meet with current industry best practices 

  • Support the backup/DR processes with a managed service 

  • Participate as a project resource to deliver infrastructure solutions. 

  • Participate in the work to elicit client requirements, develop project planning approaches, including the assessment of current state processes and tools, the development of a future state and a long-term solution roadmap, aligned and integrated with the IT’s selected technologies. 

  • Participate in and be a significant contributor to the documentation process of any assigned infrastructure projects or processes 

  • Ensures Operating Level Agreements (OLAs) and SLAs and any third-party supplier agreements are in alignment with and capable of delivering services within contracted timeframes. 

  • Be available to work from the Markham Head Office on an as needed basis 

  • Part of a 24/7 on-call rotation. 

What You Bring 

  • Self-motivated and actively participates in requirements and troubleshooting processes 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related discipline or related experience 

  • 8+ years of progressive information technology experience 

  • 5+ years of managing a Windows Server Infrastructure 

  • 5+ years of managing Exchange  365 environment 

  • 3+ years of managing a cloud infrastructure 

  • 5+ years of managing a telephony environment 

  • 2+ years managing a Teams voice and VOIP environments 

  • 2+ years managing/supporting an Operator Connect and/or VOIP telephony solution 

  • 2+ years managing/supporting a nurse call system within the healthcare industry 

  • Experience planning, configuring, deploying and managing platform technologies across on-premise and cloud scenarios. 

  • Expert knowledge of Windows Server OS 

  • Expert knowledge in MS Active Directory and Azure 

  • Excellent knowledge of OS Backup solutions, OS Patch solutions, SAN technologies, x86 Server hardware, networking, ITSM/ITIL 

  • Strong analytical skills with focus on troubleshooting and the translation of system issues to business impact 

  • Good business acumen, ability to understand end-to-end business processes; Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills to work well on cross-functional teams and at all levels of the organization 

  • Excellent communication skills, as this role has wide visibility to senior leadership and site staff.  The ability to clearly articulate one’s ideas, and to de-escalate situations where required. 

  • Experience in health sector is beneficial
