JOB SUMMARY:
The ESG Specialist will help support and accelerate the Company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting strategy, as well as drive messaging and distribution of ESG communication for the Company. This role will be responsible for consolidating relevant ESG data and performance metrics from various contributors across the organization to produce accurate sustainability reporting and disclosures that comply with relevant standards and regulations.
The ESG Specialist will work with internal departments, vendors, and industry contacts to not only meet the Company’s ESG reporting goals and sustainability efforts but will work to advance an overall ESG strategy considering the notable advancements in the field. Responsibilities include understanding the Company’s ESG objectives and measuring and reporting internally and externally. The successful candidate is a critical thinker with strong business acumen and has a deep understanding of ESG and its various reporting standards and metrics.
The ESG Specialist will report directly to the Senior Manager of ESG Reporting and Special Projects. This is a hybrid position working 3 days per week in the San Mateo corporate office.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
• Develop an in-depth understanding of Company’s data relating to ESG and sustainability.
• Support end-to-end development and publication of annual ESG Report.
• Collect and consolidate sustainability data with environmental impacts including energy, water, waste, and carbon footprint.
• Assist in coordinating responses to any third-party surveys related to ESG and other reporting.
• Stay up to date on industry standards and trends relating to ESG.
• Support with the revisions to and dissemination of Company TCFD Report and Sustainability disclosures (aligned with external standards such as SASB and GRI).
• Manage Essex’s approach to third party ratings (MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS), including monitoring performance and recommending areas of improvements.
• Support firm-wide ESG reporting process related to GRESB and CDP.
• Partner with various teams to deliver on ESG regulatory reporting (SEC).
• Actively contribute to other Company publications, regulatory filings, and ESG content.
• Assist with green building and healthy building certification documentation collection.
• Support tenant engagement programs, including development and delivery of outreach campaigns, website content, Green handbook and other printed and electronic materials.
• Support with employee engagement programs, including development and delivery of outreach campaigns, appreciation events, website content, and other printed and electronic materials.
• Support with community engagement and philanthropy programs, including development and delivery of outreach campaigns, volunteer events, website content, and other printed and electronic materials.
• Support development and maintenance of clear and consistent ESG program training, resources, and documentation, including policies and procedures.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Required:
• 2+ years of ESG-related experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Strong analytical, organizational, time management, and attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to partner with a wide range of internal colleagues.
• Proven track record to balance multiple projects and competing priorities.
• Outstanding project management skills with acute attention to detail and maintaining a consistent awareness of timelines is needed for success.
• Skilled communicator with the ability to communicate and manage expectations of multiple stakeholders.
• Strategic thinker with an ability to work independently and proactively.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, sustainability, or related field.
• REIT industry experience (residential, office, retail, lodging, health care).
• Experience with ESG industry initiatives and reporting frameworks including TCFD, GRI, SASB.
• Experience submitting to ESG benchmarks such as GRESB and CDP.
• Experience with green building and building health certification rating systems such as LEED, ENERGY STAR, Fitwel, WELL, and IREM.
• Experience developing sustainability-related communications strategies.
• Experience identifying, tracking, and reporting on ESG data.
WHAT THE JOB REQUIRES:
• Work is primarily conducted in an office setting. Requires sitting at a desk or workstation for extended periods. Involves the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers.
• Requires the ability to work Monday through Friday. Entails in-person office requirements for a minimum of 3 days per week per the Company’s hybrid policy, located at Essex's corporate offices in San Mateo.
• Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Minimal physical effort in the day-to-day tasks.
• Minimal travel may be required for occasional meetings, training, or conferences.

The salary range for this position is $76,000.00 - $108,000.00 per year. New hires generally start between $76,000.00 - $93,000.00 per year. The final salary offer will be determined after reviewing relevant factors, including but not limited to skill sets; relevant experience; internal equity; and other business and organizational needs.
