The gRED Infrastructure and Architecture (I&A) group seeks a versatile and motivated Product Manager to join us to lead the development and growth of our machine learning (ML) application hosting Infrastructure. This role is critical for supporting our innovative research, ML and data analysis needs. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of cloud technologies, collaborator management, and the ability to translate user needs, goals and challenges into actionable statements. You will define and drive the vision and strategy for shared cloud infrastructure and platform products, enabling seamless software development and powering scientific innovation.
 

Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) is redefining drug discovery through data, technology, and computational science to unlock groundbreaking treatments. Home to extraordinary scientists, bioinformaticians, and computational researchers, we use high-performance computing, cloud platforms, ML, and petabyte-scale storage to drive innovation. The Infrastructure & Architecture (I&A) Product Management team plays an important role in this mission. Reporting to the Head of Product Management for I&A, this role offers the opportunity to shape the future of scientific software development at an established biotech leader.
 

The Opportunity:

A critical part of our Product Management team, you will ensure alignment with users needs and business goals, driving value for our users and who power the development of medicines with global impact:

  • You are defining and presenting the vision, strategy, and roadmap for the cloud Container Orchestration Platforms that host our ML applications.

  • You are partnering with collaborators (users, engineers, ML experts, scientists etc.) to capture and prioritize requirements

  • You oversee platform design, development, and deployment, ensuring scalability, security, and performance.

  • You build positive relationships with collaborators including users, development teams, architects, and executives and represent user and market needs to the business.

  • You define and track key performance indicators to measure platform effectiveness.

  • You lead cross-functional teams to deliver EKS solutions and craft and present compelling narratives to communicate platform value.

Who You Are:

You are a Product Manager or Technical Leader with proven experience driving cloud-based platforms at scale. You thrive at the intersection of technology, strategy, and impact, shaping world-class infrastructure for innovative applications.

  • Knowledgeable about cloud computing (AWS, GCP, e.g.) and container orchestration (EKS, Kubernetes, Docker) to build scalable, resilient platforms.

  • Proven ability to define product strategy, align collaborators, and implement with precision.

  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills, influencing engineers, executives, and cross-functional teams.

  • Passionate about delivering innovative, high-performance platforms that empower scientific breakthroughs.
     

Many Successful Candidates Bring Experience In:

You have a track record of building and scaling cloud platforms in sophisticated, research-intensive environments. You thrive on solving challenging technical problems and bridging the gap between scientific discovery and innovative infrastructure.

  • Experience (6+ years) in biotech, pharma, or scientific computing environments, supporting advanced research and innovation.

  • Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker and cloud architectures.

  • Familiarity with ML infrastructure, including model training, deployment, and GPU-based workloads.

  • Strong expertise in platform product management, from API design to scalability and cost optimization.

  • Ability to transform complex research needs into scalable platform solutions while aligning cross-functional teams.

  • Understanding of security, compliance, and access control for containerized environments.

Relocation benefits are not available for this posting.

Onsite presence, on our South San Francisco campus, is expected for at least 3 days a week.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $148,600 - $276,000 of hiring range.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
