As a Software Engineering Manager for Agile Delivery technology teams, you will lead and mentor a team of talented software engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable, and innovative software solutions. You will be responsible for managing the development process, ensuring alignment with Agile methodologies, and fostering a collaborative and dynamic work environment. Your role will involve coordinating with cross-functional teams, defining project goals, and driving continuous improvement and plan upskilling for team members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Technical Leadership

  • Aligns organizational goals, practices, and projects with enabling technology to support technology strategy

  • Maintains the organization's effectiveness and efficiency by delivering and supporting the organization’s digital transformation journey

  • Works closely with leaders to understand the service requirements of customers and other key stakeholders and delivers IT strategies and solutions

  • Directs research and recommends new products and new technologies, builds prototypes, and shares knowledge with other areas of IT to support corporate business objectives

  • Mentors and trains team members on programming techniques, test driven development, and system functionality

  • Identifies and supports emerging technologies into the product team for future projects and possible integration

  • Makes recommendations to leader on forecasting, annual budget, and scheduling expenditures.  Analyzes variances, and implements corrective action

  • Ensures vendor compliance with organization's policies, procedures, and regimes through approved validation methods

  • Provides input to support technology operations purchases, including hardware, software, support services, and telecommunications circuits

  • Works closely with outside vendors to implement and oversee systems as well as day-to-day processes

Solution Ownership and Delivery

  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees daily operational activities of assigned technology products

  • Manages and aligns software with the business objectives of EMC

  • Recommends architecture direction for software and product team services to build upon and improve operational effectiveness and efficiencies

  • Collaborates with technology team and business stakeholders to identify and assess the technology capabilities required to meet or maintain the business and product roadmap

  • Identifies and communicates technical problem trends and proactively develops ways to address

  • Recommends and oversees the collection and review of operational metrics, including measures at an operational and executive level and continually updates and improves metrics to meet new requirements

  • Provides recommendations on strategy and initiatives impacting  technology applications to meet the current and future needs of respective business areas while maintaining our technical architecture and support

  • Actively aligns projects and corporate initiatives

  • Plans and guides strategy for project execution according to established methodologies and standards

  • Answers technical questions about project direction, automation of technology, system security and functionality, and data quality of assigned product teams

  • Ensures project work plan is followed and updated to ensure customer requirements are met promptly and within the allocated budget

  • Evaluates hardware, software, and services through data-driven process planning

Solution Development

  • Facilitates the design and development of architecture for business applications and core services

  • Ensures team collaboration for designing interfaces to complex enterprise and third-party applications

  • Proactively anticipates and proposes solutions to reduce potential impact to other systems

  • Promotes and encourages collaboration with product teams to ensure that corporate business objectives are met

  • Ensures the efficient use of core services, packages and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in product teams

  • Analyzes day-to-day functionality of assigned applications and provides IT Leadership with insights and actions

  • Guides test driven development, including application test cases and application validations for configurations to ensure they meet business requirements, performance level, and availability thresholds

  • Monitors effective use of assigned applications and systems with alignment to technical architectural standards and business goals

Team Leadership and Development

  • Manages and monitors the workload and performance of the team

  • Collaborates with team members to establish performance goals and monitors status, conducts performance reviews, and provides coaching

  • Interviews, hires, and recommends salary adjustments for team members 

  • Resolves disciplinary issues, reviews results, action plans, and progress

  • Organizes and plans educational opportunities for assigned team

  • Develops team expertise and completes succession planning, including identifying talent and implementing development plans for critical positions

  • Supports diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives

  • Fosters an innovative culture, including supporting new ideas and providing guidance on potential changes

Quality and Support

  • Implements the strategy for effective testing plans using test-driven development at the program and system level

  • Guides the strategy for alerting and monitoring of applications

  • Establishes and implements the strategy with product teams about remediation of issues with security, data quality and integrity of systems

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The education and experience below are required for the job unless labelled as preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or related field, such as information systems or equivalent relevant experience

  • Ten years of experience in progressively responsible roles in IT or equivalent experience

  • Experience with core system platform management

  • Property and casualty insurance experience

  • Prior experience with cloud technologies like AWS preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent knowledge of programming languages for applicable systems

  • Strong problem-solving abilities to analyze complex situations

  • Advanced attention to detail, organizational and multi-tasking skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation and documentation skills

  • Ability to work in coordination with others to accomplish departmental and company objectives through proper delegation

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, meet deadlines, and monitor the financial budgeting and its impact on the overall projects

  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify problems and implement effective solutions

  • Good knowledge of insurance principles

  • Excellent knowledge of key performance indicators (KPIs) and ways to improve them
