Reporting To: Will Ferguson - Director of Platform Engineering

What we are looking for: We are seeking a skilled and motivated Engineering Manager to lead, mentor, and support a team of Software, ML, and Data Engineers in delivering high-quality software solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for driving technical excellence, fostering a collaborative culture, and aligning engineering efforts with business goals. You will balance leadership responsibilities with a deep understanding of engineering best practices, ensuring both team growth and successful project execution.

This role will partner closely with our Applied Science, VFX, Product, Engineering, and Film Innovation teams in the US and UK offices. In this role you will be expected to be a subject matter expert in data labeling, computer vision concepts, large deep learning system development, model optimization and acceleration. As a leader in the science department, you will be expected to understand research initiatives, build pipelines to evaluate KPIs at scale, deliver datasets to mitigate model limitations, and communicate ongoing team efforts to various stakeholders. Our work in automated visual translation is just the beginning, and we’re developing countless exciting products based on the application of our proprietary, cornerstone research.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing guidance on technical execution, career growth, and professional development.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to define and prioritize engineering work aligned with business objectives.
• Drive engineering excellence by establishing best practices for development, testing, and deployment.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and psychological safety within the engineering team.
• Facilitate effective communication across teams and leadership, ensuring transparency in project progress and challenges.
• Participate in the hiring and onboarding process to build a diverse and high-performing engineering team.
• Provide regular performance feedback and conduct evaluations to support engineers’ career growth.
• Ensure the team delivers high-quality software solutions on time and within scope.
• Help resolve technical roadblocks and challenges while maintaining a focus on long-term scalability and maintainability.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in software engineering, with a track record of leading technical teams.
• Strong people management skills, with experience mentoring and developing engineers at different career levels.
• Deep understanding of software development lifecycle, architecture, and best practices.
• Experience with agile methodologies and modern development workflows.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with an ability to influence stakeholders and drive alignment.
• Passion for fostering an inclusive, growth-oriented engineering culture.
• Hands-On technical experience in one or more relevant technologiesExperience in scaling engineering teams in fast-paced environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters or PhD graduate in Computer Science, Machine Learning and Computer Vision.
• 5+ years building, leading, and scaling deep learning, machine learning engineering teams
• Experience in a rapidly scaling startup environment
• Experience in Generative AI and Computer Vision focused projectsExperience in entertainment, film, or VFX industry

Interview Process:

At Flawless, our team and interview process want to help you show your best self. We’ll dive into past projects and simulate working together.

Our interview process is six rounds with some casual Zoom (or in-person) to get to know each other:

- Recruiting Screen: 30-45 minute call with our recruiting team (We want to discuss your interests and motivations as well as the practical details and make sure that Flawless would be a good fit f or you)

- HM Interview: - 45 minute zoom call focussing on your problem solving and troubleshooting skills

- System Design Interview: 45 Minutes 

- Leadership/Management: 45 Minutes zoom Interview where you will meet variety of your potential future colleagues as well as show us your technical skills in more detail. This is more how you approach problem solving and troubleshooting coding architecture and best practices for your team.

- Behavioural: 45 minutes a discussion where dig into how you handle challenges and communicate.

- Final with our CEO:  45 minute onsite interview sharing your journey as an Engineering Leader and understanding our vision as a company. He will want to understand your connection to our mission and how you see yourself as a Leader in our organization as well as answer all questions.

Your Recruiter will be your main point of contact and prepare you for interviews. You’ll meet 6 people from across the business. (We make sure that you have time in each interview to ask them questions). If we don’t give an offer, we’ll provide feedback!
