The Role
As a Software Engineer on SpaceX's Ground Segment team, you will design, develop, and test software to control communications and tracking for Falcon, Dragon, and Starship vehicles. This includes building reliable systems, performing data analysis, and collaborating with various teams to ensure effective integration and performance of space mission operations.
Summary Generated by Built In

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

SOFTWARE ENGINEER (GROUND SEGMENT)

The SpaceX Ground Segment team is responsible for mission-critical space to ground communications and tracking of our Falcon, Dragon, and Starship vehicles. They design, build, and operate an Earth ground station network, including launch site and recovery RF communications and optical tracking. For NASA missions, the team is responsible for NASA mission control interfaces, including command, telemetry, voice and video. Additionally, as the focus turns towards the human space exploration beyond low Earth orbit, the team is working on developing the infrastructure that will be used to communicate with our vehicles and teams on the moon and beyond.

As a software engineer on the Ground Segment team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing the software that is used to control SpaceX communications and tracking assets for Falcon, Dragon, and Starship. You will develop projects through their full product life cycle. You will be expected to work alongside operators in Mission Control. You will demonstrate extreme ownership of this software through deep understanding of system requirements and interfaces while pushing to meet aggressive timelines. You will also closely collaborate with other disciplines and think at a system level to ensure a high level of reliability for mission critical tracking and data on systems that include ones used in support of human spaceflight.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, test, and integrate highly reliable software systems that run on both commercial and SpaceX developed hardware
  • Develop continuous integration and testing systems in order to confidently deploy new software to a production environment
  • Develop prototypes to evaluate new designs and hardware and provide quantitative analysis for decision making
  • Partner with avionics, flight operators, GNC, and other stakeholders to identify and execute software solutions
  • Perform post operation data analysis to evaluate system performance and inform continuous improvement

What We Do

SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches the world’s most advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk to revolutionize space transportation, with the ultimate goal of making life multiplanetary.

SpaceX has gained worldwide attention for a series of historic milestones. It is the only private company ever to return a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, which it first accomplished in December 2010. The company made history again in May 2012 when its Dragon spacecraft attached to the International Space Station, exchanged cargo payloads, and returned safely to Earth — a technically challenging feat previously accomplished only by governments. Since then Dragon has delivered cargo to and from the space station multiple times, providing regular cargo resupply missions for NASA.
