About Your Role:
Dotdash Meredith is looking for a forward-thinking Engineer focused on API and services development with demonstrated technical excellence for an exciting opportunity to design and scale mission-critical pieces of the next generation of our publishing. You will work in a collaborative Agile environment to build high-performance backend services to support and add new features to our new brand-focused mobile application.
In this role you will leverage your full-stack engineering expertise, primarily using Node and Javascript/TypeScript. The role offers opportunities for professional growth and experience with challenges of scale as we explore new ways of getting our content to viewers.
In-office Expectations: This position offers remote work flexibility; however, if you reside within a commutable distance to one of our offices in New York, Des Moines, Birmingham, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Seattle, the expectation is to work from the office three times per month. The team is currently centered in NYC, so applicants there are preferred.
About Your Contributions:
-
Independently design and develop new backend services or features that seamlessly bridge our frontend mobile applications and in-house content-management systems.
-
Collaborate effectively with the frontend team to define API endpoints, data structures, and authentication requirements.
-
Contribute to the optimization of existing backend services by identifying performance bottlenecks and implementing improvements.
-
Participate actively in code reviews and pair programming sessions, providing constructive feedback and driving continuous improvement.
About You:
You have a love for technology and problem-solving, and a strong desire to deliver quality software as quickly as possible. You have
-
3+ years of proven experience developing and maintaining server-side applications.
-
Strong technical proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and Node.js, and experience using them to build and maintain RESTful APIs and other backend services, ideally within a microservices architecture.
-
Experience managing data storage, ideally with Firestore or equivalent NoSQL databases, including maintaining performance and data consistency via optimized queries, indexes, transactions, and other best practices for managing large datasets. The ideal candidate would also have experience working with BigQuery.
-
Comfortable deploying services in cloud platforms like AWS and GCP, and monitoring the infrastructure health using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or native cloud provider solutions; able to set up CI/CD pipelines to automate testing, building, and deployment processes as needed.
-
Familiar with the security challenges inherent in mobile app development, and ready to implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g., JWT, OAuth, Device Attestation) for our APIs, and take whatever other steps necessary to protect backend services from common web vulnerabilities such as XSS, SQL injection, and DDoS attacks.
-
Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker) and orchestration tools (e.g., Kubernetes), as well as familiarity with serverless architectures and functions-as-a-service platforms.
