Job Summary
The Safety Assistant will maintain a safe and healthy work environment by coordinating safe performance of tasks associated with the plant mission by constantly interfacing with supervision and plant personnel on safe work practices, hazard identification, and elimination. The Safety Assistant will review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors. The Safety Assistant will conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.
Essential Functions

  • Inspect work environments and issue permits.
  • Operate burning ground facilities according to RCRA/TDEC regulations including certification of processes.
  • Receive explosive contaminated pan waste and properly dispose of through burning of pans. Maintain records for State of Tennessee air permit and RCRA.
  • Operate decontamination oven and verify appropriate temperature ranges at a specific length of time. Complete required start up/shut down check sheets.
  • Maintain records and reports associated with the handling of explosive wastes, MPPEH, and MDEH materials as outlined in the burning ground and decontamination oven standard operating procedures.
  • Flashing of potentially contaminated equipment; complete proper permit and stand by while flashing completed. Verify and wear required PPE of blast vest and face shield. Verify that flashing area reaches required thermal decontamination of 600 degrees F.
  • Certify the decontamination of explosive contaminated materials (MPPEH) and the disposal of explosive waste by accepted methods (DoD 4140.62).
  • Complete employee explosive demonstrations.
  • Perform fire and safety inspections on facilities and equipment.
  • Perform periodic audits of standards, procedures and job performance to identify non-compliance and unsafe acts. Respond with recommendations related to training or procedure modifications. Submit written reports documenting findings, recommendations and follow up activities.
  • Function as Incident Command. Respond and investigate incidents involving personnel injuries or illnesses, property damage and near misses. Submit detailed incident reports to include recommendations for preventing a recurrence. Complete initial investigation report for each reported injury, first aid, spill/release, near miss, property damage, deluge activation, medical, or other.
  • Complete Team Incident investigations (5-Why, 3-Legged 5-Why, TapRoot) on significant incidents and complete report.
  • Participate in functions of Process Safety Management Program (1910.119).
  • Advise plant personnel on matters of safety, health, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain a presence in the production, maintenance, acid and utilities areas. Employees should expect to see you on a regular basis.
  • Inspect and certify rail and motor vehicles used for the shipment hazardous materials and explosives.
  • Maintain an up to date working knowledge of regulatory standards, Plant Protection Standards and Standard Operating Procedures in order to function as a reliable resource for safe plant operations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of department instruments and equipment in order to provide the services necessary for the safe completion of operational tasks.
  • Monitor and control the organization's health and safety standards in accordance to DoD Standards, Plant Protection Standards, and the Subcontractor Safety Guide, as well as OSHA regulations.
  • Construction/Modernization Project assignments.
  • Review of Process changes/Equipment changes, as required, to meet DoD, OSHA, NEC, and ANSI standards.
  • Conduct scaffold inspections in accordance with OSHA regulations and complete initial/daily inspection tags, as required.
  • Complete Subcontractor Safety Audits in accordance with DoD Standards, Plant Protection Standards, and Subcontractor Safety Guide, as well as OSHA regulations.
  • Conduct quantitative / qualitative fit test for initial / annual 500+ employees.
  • Review Audiometric test results with required 500+ employees.
  • Complete annual laboratory vent hood testing for all site hoods and submit report.
  • Complete quarterly inspections of vehicles/trailers that transport explosives and submit report.
  • Provide guidance and expert advice to management and other groups on technical systems and process related topics.
  • Assist Industrial Hygiene in collecting air-monitoring equipment at the beginning and end of employee work shifts.
  • Conduct Air Monitoring for all pictures in explosive/hazardous area production buildings.
  • Complete annual ISO 45001internal audits and/or QSHE Inspections for each department at the facility. Each department has an annual inspection that is scheduled throughout year.
  • Conduct and/or participate in Safety Governance meetings and issue monthly report/email; enter QSHE tickets for action items.
  • Maintain Plant Protection Standards; review and update annually.
  • Assist with snow removal using specialized equipment when ice and snow creates an imminent hazardous driving situation that adversely affects the movement of explosive material. In the case of extremely hazardous conditions, the Safety Assistants may restrict traffic.
  • Evaluate PPE for on-site use after completing hazardous risk assessment of a Job Task. Also, complete forms that require Safety approval for the purchase of footwear and eyeglasses.
  • Have completed 24/40-hour HAZWOPER courses, as needed. Ability to complete 8-hour annual HAZWOPER refresher to meet RCRA requirements.
  • Have completed 10/30-hour OSHA training, as needed.
  • Complete 40 hour supervisor asbestos training and annual 8-hour refresher.
  • Complete Ammunition & Explosives Safety for Defense Contractors training.
  • Identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts of info1mation by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
  • Analyze medical data
  • Analyze effectiveness of safety systems or procedures
  • Evaluate manufacturing or processing systems
  • Conduct evaluations of worker exposure to radiation or noise
  • Test air quality, noise, temperature, or radiation
  • Complete a daily shift report at the end of each shift giving thorough details of your shift activities.
  • Perform additional tasks and services as assigned by the Safety Manager.

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $44362 - $70979
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
