Job Summary

Environmental and Employee Health & Safety work encompasses activities related to the environment (including the broader community impacted by environmental hazards) and employees including

  • Developing and implementing policies and practices to identify/mitigate hazardous conditions within the workplace and external environments

  • Investigating accidents and environmental incidents and liaising with engineers, management, and health and safety regulatory authorities to identify causes of accidents and prevent their recurrence

  • Providing advice and training on safety protocols and conducting audits to ensure compliance with organization and government standards related to environmental and employee health and safety

  • Maintaining relationships with the community, environmental groups, and other stakeholders impacted by the environmental performance of the organization

Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensures the development, maintenance and improvement of programs and/or processes to drive site performance improvement and assure conformance with Synthomer’s Safety Standards and Environmental Management Standards.

  • Supports site SHE&S culture transformation in partnership with the global and local site leadership. Facilitates development of SHE&S annual operating and strategic plans; and works with department managers to ensure accountability to plan delivery.

  • Tracks and analyzes SHE&S Metrics such as unsafe act/condition reporting, corrective actions, MOC status, behavior safety audits, incidents and injuries. Develops programs and strategies to address gaps and themes identified.

  • Perform audits and inspections of plant operations and programs to ensure compliance with Synthomer processes and standards applicable to the plant (Environmental, Safety/PSM, Responsible Care, ISO 9001, TSCA, RMP, etc.).

  • Oversees effective execution and improvement of the SHE&S Training Program that includes in person training, monthly safety blitzes, daily meetings, computer-based training, 3rd party training as well as development of course materials.

  • Interact with the site workforce at all levels to increase employee involvement, demonstrate, educate, coach and enforce SHE&S work practices and provide SHE&S technical and regulatory expertise.

  • Oversees execution and ensures effectiveness of security, emergency response, industrial hygiene and reporting activities for the sites.

  • Supports Process Safety Management (PSM) program to ensure compliance and improvement. Lead specified elements and provide technical support to ensure process safety considerations are well-managed in the facilities.

  • Oversees the sites’ environmental program execution to meet requirements associated with large quantity waste generator, Title V permit, NPDES permit, wastewater treatment operation and TRI and Tier II reporting.

  • Ensures Responsible Care Management System compliance and integration.

  • Participates in global program development, projects, support and auditing activities as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent experience in an Occupational Safety or affiliated discipline or another applicable technical field (engineering, chemistry)

  • Minimum 10 years professional experience in manufacturing or chemical industry in a safety leadership role.

  • Ability to work independently, contribute within a team, and actively engage and partner with manufacturing and technical associates.

  • Previous experience managing/supervising an EH&S team.

  • EHS functional/technical expertise with strong knowledge of safe work practices, auditing, record keeping, investigation/RCFA, regulatory permitting and preparing/delivering training.

  • Experience knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and monitoring techniques

  • Organizational priority-setting skills, attention to detail, follow-through, effective written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Ability to build consensus and influence a diverse group of associates in safe behaviors and practices.

  • Advanced working knowledge of EHS regulations. Ability to draw from experience and knowledge of technical learnings and from peer resources to arrive at professional decisions to recommend to site personnel.

  • Working knowledge of EHS management practices, processes, and expectations is preferred.

  • Working in a union environment with certified/qualified professional crafts.

  • Microsoft Office Applications (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint).

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Required

  • Must be a strong leader and advocate for SHE&S, have experience in culture development and implementing a SHE&S management system

  • Have knowledge and experience with implementing and maintaining compliance with OSHA, EPA and Process Safety Management regulations

  • Ability to influence without authority

  • Able to develop and execute project plans and direct the site to achieve the required milestones

  • Has strong problem solving and decision-making skills as well as make valid recommendations for resolution

  • Experience with air, waste, wastewater and DOT regulations

  • Experience developing and managing the emergency action plans

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, government agencies and other outside entities.

  • Have the ability to work collaboratively and demonstrate effective listening skills

  • This position covers a plant that operates on 24/7 schedule. A presence on the off shifts is required for this position

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Preferred

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager is desired

  • Operational line supervisory/management experience
