Afterpay is a people-powered movement to change the way we pay. Shop now, pay later.
The Role
The Server Engineer in Merchants & Partners will enhance the Core monolith of Afterpay, collaborate with engineering teams, improve designs, and ensure the reliable operation of payment integration across various platforms. Responsibilities include developing security-compliant systems and diagnosing issues to maintain high-quality service levels.
Summary Generated by Built In

It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 50+ million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world's relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We've been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.
The Team
Cash App Commerce owns our retail payment products including Cash App Pay and Afterpay products which gives our customers the ability to take their money further by opting to pay in full, pay in four, or longer term financing.
As a member of the Merchants & Partners team within Cash App Commerce, you will be responsible for supporting how our payment products are integrated and supported across our vast distribution network, composed of direct merchants (SMB, Enterprise), ecommerce platforms, and payment services providers.
The Role
You will join a collaborative team responsible for the Core monolith at the heart of Afterpay, where you'll help evolve its architecture, enhance the developer experience for all who work with it, and ensure its reliable operation in production. This role offers opportunities to contribute to reliability and architectural standards across the Commerce organisation while expanding your technical expertise and leadership skills in a supportive environment.
Your work will support systems that process millions of transactions daily across the globe. You'll collaborate closely with your team to ensure the system remains robust, scalable, and prepared for future demands. In this role, you'll contribute to diagnosing and resolving issues, shaping system designs, refactoring to improve quality, and fostering strong partnerships with other teams.
You Will

  • Collaborate with platform and product engineering teams to enhance the Core monolith and optimise its operation.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the system as a whole, leveraging that knowledge to improve its design, development, and operational processes.
  • Build systems that manage customers' sensitive data and hold Cash App to the highest standards for security and compliance.
  • See the big picture to design fault tolerant systems so the team can be brave and move fast without showing a negative impact to customers.

You Have

  • 3 or more years of software development or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with public APIs - either building or consuming them
  • Experience with managing AWS cloud infrastructure
  • Strong desire to serve developers both internal and external
  • A vested interest in advancing Cash App's vision of building for economic empowerment
  • Aspirations to grow and learn as an engineer on a highly collaborative team

Technologies We Use and Teach

  • Kotlin, including JUnit, Guice and JVM
  • HTTP/S, JSON, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and Open API
  • AWS Aurora (MySQL), AWS Elasticache (Redis), AWS DynamoDB, NewSQL (horizontally-sharded databases)
  • Amazon Web Services (EKS, SQS, S3, MSK, KMS)
  • CI/CD tooling (Buildkite, shell scripts, Python)
  • Event-driven, service-oriented architecture (Kafka, Temporal)
