POSITION SUMMARY: Sergeants are responsible for providing a safe environment for the Endicott College community by for enforcing all state, federal and local laws, as well as college policies and regulations. Sergeant’s act as shift supervisors providing leadership, guidance, and direction to the officers, dispatchers and student workers assigned to the shift. Sergeant’s research and coordinate all building openings and closings scheduled for their shift, supervise and assist with patrol services, investigations, fire safety and crime prevention.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversee all the officers, dispatchers and student employee functions assigned to their shift
- Conduct briefings, issue patrol assignments, supervise officers in the field and review all reports and logs, generated on the shift, for correctness and completeness.
- Respond to incidents and calls for service, assuming command from patrol officers.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations; prepare clear and concise incident reports.
- A working knowledge of present Departmental General Orders, and other such written directives, and have the ability to recognize areas for improvement.
- Write Performance Appraisals on officers and dispatchers under their immediate supervision.
- Oversee the deployment of personnel on their shift so to provide a safe and secure presence on campus by application of conscientious vehicle, foot and bicycle patrol functions.
- Communicate well with their staff and pass on all relevant information to the oncoming shift.
- Act as an informational resource for visitors and community members.
- Employ effective community service oriented techniques, ensuring positive and professional interactions are maintained with the Endicott College community members.
- Interact with local police, fire and ambulance agencies and assist as needed or directed.
- Testify in judicial and criminal hearings as required.
- Enforce applicable state, federal and local criminal codes, College parking regulations, student code of conduct, and College regulations and policies.
- Respond, supervise and investigate crimes reported, vehicle accidents on campus property, medical emergencies, fires, safety hazards and fire and security alarms received.
- Oversee and assign security and safety inspections of buildings and grounds, openings and securing of buildings, and perform or assist in crime prevention functions.
- Instruct safety related classes for Officers, Students, Staff and Faculty.
- Participate in various functions and events sponsored by student groups.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or their designee.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a valid Massachusetts driver's license
- Pass annual motor vehicle and criminal background checks
- Pass psychological and medical tests, as scheduled
- Be a qualified instructor (or committed to becoming one) in a topic which relates to public safety
- Associate’s degree or higher in criminal justice (or a related field) and/or minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience, preferably in an academic environment
- Be eligible for appointment as a State Special Police Officer under Massachusetts General Laws.
- Maintain certification as a POST Certified police officer by the MA POST Commission
- Have attended, or be able to pass an MPTC certified Police Academy
- Demonstrate excellent people skills employing effective community service oriented techniques, ensuring positive and professional interactions are maintained with Endicott College community members and their guests
- Demonstrate computer knowledge for all related systems and programs utilized by department
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to complete all reports required in a clear and precise manner
- Maintain active CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid (First Responder) certifications, and complete all MPTC annual in-Service requirements
