As a Senior Underwriting Consultant, you manage the day-to-day relations with key partners of the Ontario, Atlantic and Western markets by providing expert risk selection advice to help them and their members and clients experience best-in-class service in the new business and underwriting process. Using your extensive technical and interpersonal competence, you make sound recommendations in the preparation of business development files primarily for large and complex cases. You also participate in the planning and execution of operationally and conceptually complex projects and initiatives that require comprehensive analysis and understanding of the line of business and strategic goals, particularly with regard to partner relations and sales. Coordination is critical, so you interact with stakeholders working in other fields, both external and internal to the company. Interpersonal savvy is therefore essential. You serve as specialist advisor and subject matter expert, as well as resource person and coach for decision-making bodies. More specifically, you will be required to:
-
Advise and support the sales team and partners in the positioning, planning and preparation of business development files, particularly for large and complex cases.
-
Recommend ideas to partners in order to present the files to members/clients, which requires mastery of advanced sales and underwriting concepts as well as financial acumen.
-
Assist in developing and updating underwriting standards, processes and programs to support partners and achieve your unit’s strategic projects and initiatives with regard to business growth and risk management.
-
Participate in working committees on more technically complex files with a team of experts such as tax specialists, actuaries, lawyers and high net worth advisors.
-
Handle requests for exceptions and file reviews requiring business decisions. In handling such requests, you must be creative in seeking alternative solutions in a political context of negotiation and must constantly ensure the balance between risk management, the political aspect and business development.
-
Develop and manage a feedback process between external sales partners and the line of business to identify, analyze and diagnose major issues and opportunities for improvement, as well as make recommendations to decision-making bodies.
-
Promote Desjardins’s risk selection philosophy and processes by delivering risk and underwriting presentations at conferences, conventions, training, sales visits and other platforms for external presentations.
