The Senior Supervisor of Robotics Technical Support at Boston Dynamics is responsible for leading and managing a team of highly-skilled technicians responsible for the repair, maintenance, and support of a fleet of humanoid robots. You can wear several hats, are highly adaptable, and can support the assembly, testing, robot operation, and troubleshooting of compact electrical and mechanical systems in some of the world's most advanced robotics. Every day you will do a combination of hands-on work on the robot, prioritize work for the team, make high-velocity decisions, and drive higher robot uptime. You will work on prototype electrical system designs, dense electromechanical integrations, and frequently contribute hands-on in building and debugging electrical systems, ranging from small test systems to fully integrated prototype robots. You will assign tasks to team members based on their individual skill sets as well as help train new hires and mentor current team members to grow their capabilities.
Robotics includes a broad range of technical subjects within mechanical and electrical engineering. To thrive in this role, you must be able to work quickly and adapt to constantly evolving technical considerations, while keeping track of several threads at the same time.
Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.
Day to day activities:
-
Conduct daily repair stand-ups to prioritize work, ensure internal and external customers are supported, and robot availability is maximized.
-
Conduct initial build of complex prototype electromechanical sub-assemblies such as computers, power distribution systems, sensors, embedded data acquisition systems, prototype lithium battery packs, and embedded processors for robotic systems.
-
Supervise a small group of repair technicians, overseeing their work for quality and completeness as well as mentoring and training them to grow their knowledge and skills.
-
Independently conduct design validation testing for new electrical and computer systems. Troubleshoot and identify root causes of electrical system failures in sub-assemblies and complete robots.
-
Create test plans and procedures with little engineering guidance. Perform a critical role by identifying detailed and nuanced electrical issues and recommending corrective actions to design engineers.
-
May design custom PCB’s for test fixtures or robot subsystems using an electrical CAD program such as Altium.
-
Design, build, and document prototype cable assemblies in dynamic robotic applications.
-
Iterate and improve upon prototype designs in collaboration with design engineers to progress designs from initial prototype toward reproducible assemblies with good quality control.
-
Plan and document repair lab equipment, work spaces, and project timelines in coordination with managers and engineers to ensure we have the environment and equipment necessary to accomplish project goals related to creation of prototype robots.
Required Skills:
-
Experience mentoring and training electrical technicians
-
Demonstrated experience interpreting schematic capture and PCB layout
-
Hands-on experience building and debugging electro-mechanical test setups
-
Experience with PCB rework and cable assembly, especially technically difficult rework
-
Experience with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, power supplies, programmable loads, thermal probes
-
Experience with communication interfaces, e.g. CAN, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C
-
Be able to multitask, and change priorities quickly as needed
-
Experience with maintenance and repair workflows
-
Experience with ticketing systems and work management softwares such as JIRA
-
Be able to clearly communicate test results and data
Nice to have:
-
Experience with test automation
-
Experience with NI LabVIEW, python, and command-line operations in a UNIX-like OS
-
Familiarity with position encoder and force sensor technology
-
Experience working with robots and/or robotic systems.
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
Boston Dynamics will never ask you to divulge your personal financial or account information as part of its recruiting process.
