Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams - People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more - provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.
The Role
The Cloud FinOps team is focused on improving cloud cost attribution, visibility, automation, and metadata standardization across Block's cloud infrastructure. Our mission is to develop scalable frameworks and automation that help teams to manage their cloud resources.
You will play a critical part in designing and implementing frameworks that improve cloud resource accountability, metadata management, and financial transparency.
As an engineer on this team, you will build automation and tooling that standardizes cost attribution, enhances metadata governance, and surfaces financial insights to platform and product engineers. You'll work with cloud economics, finance, platform, and product engineering teams to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of cloud spend across AWS, GCP, and Kubernetes environments.
This role can be performed from any location in North America.
You Will
- Develop and maintain open-source frameworks that enable accurate reporting and forecasting across Block's cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), Kubernetes workloads, and other cloud vendors such as Datadog, Databricks, and Snowflake.
- Build infrastructure automation and cost attribution tooling, using Go, to ensure reliable cloud resource tracking.
- Surface cost attribution data to product and platform engineers, ensuring they have clear insights into their cloud spend.
- Collaborate with Finance and Engineering teams to ensure cost allocation aligns with business structures and reporting needs.
- Standardize metadata and tagging practices to improve resource visibility, ensure cost attribution accuracy, and promote better financial forecasting.
- Enhance cloud cost tracking mechanisms by integrating metadata from multiple sources (e.g., Workday, Snowflake, and proprietary application registries).
- Improve cloud cost visibility, allowing engineering teams to better manage their cloud expenses.
- Develop dashboards and analytics tools that provide teams with real-time insights into their cloud spend.
- Help shape the long-term strategy for cloud cost visibility at Block, ensuring all cloud spend is tracked, fairly allocated, and visible to teams through an accurate and standardized reporting system.
You Have
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on cloud FinOps, cloud infrastructure, or platform engineering.
- Proficiency in Go (or high proficiency in another backend language with a willingness to learn).
- Familiarity with cloud cost management and reporting tools, such as AWS Cost Explorer, GCP Billing APIs, Vantage, or Snowflake.
- Experience working with accounting, cost attribution, or FinOps-related challenges.
- Understanding of Kubernetes cost attribution methodologies, including tracking costs at the namespace and resource level.
- Familiarity with metadata-driven cloud resource tracking, including automated tagging and integration with cost reporting tools.
- Experience with data processing pipelines (e.g., Snowflake, Looker, SQL) to analyze and improve cloud infrastructure cost insights.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, finance, and platform teams to design and implement cost attribution solutions.
- Bonus: Experience with TypeScript and React for integrating cost attribution and metadata insights into developer-facing tools.
