IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
We are looking for a software engineer to join our small but effective compiler engineering team. As a software engineering on the compiler team, you’ll be part of a customer-obsessed, cross-organizational and cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. You will be critical to the company’s success, delivering results with measurable impact.
As part of the compiler engineering team, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining ahead-of-time (AOT) and just-in-time (JIT) compilation for quantum computing, including quantum machine learning and quantum chemistry.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve our quantum compiler stack; we’re a small team and we count on each other to run with projects independently.
- Perform R&D to support new hardware platforms, programming paradigms, and software tooling to enable optimal performance for quantum computing workloads.
- Deliver world-class quantum circuit optimizations with compiler innovations and efficient execution of those innovations; convert abstract descriptions of algorithms into efficient and understandable software implementations
- Help the industry define programming models, algorithms, and intermediate representations for quantum computing.
- Interpret and communicate complex concepts to the wider team.
- Collaborate with an experienced interdisciplinary staff.
- Participate in design and code reviews.
- Approach problems pragmatically.
- Help us continuously improve how we do things.
The ideal candidate will show potential for: leading and contributing to multiple simultaneous development efforts, projects, and initiatives; balancing technical expertise and savvy with strong business judgment to make great technology decisions; striving for simplicity and demonstrating creativity and incisive judgment.

- 3+ years of development experience in compiler optimization for various architectures.
- Strong knowledge of Python and a systems programming language such as C++/Rust, or a highly-productive language like OCaml; and a strong math background, especially linear algebra.
- Experience with algorithm design and development, benchmarking, and performance-oriented optimizations.
- Strong focus on testing and software quality.
You’d be a great fit with:
- An Advanced degree in Computer Science, Math, or a related field; non-traditional backgrounds are welcome.
- Experience developing projects using MLIR/LLVM and/or Qiskit, Cirq, or the like.
- Understanding of advanced compiler optimization techniques.
- Education or training in quantum computing and/or quantum information science (such as work experience, coursework, thesis, or peer-reviewed publications).
- Experience developing toolkits, compilers, or runtime environments for heterogeneous architectures.

What We Do
Quantum computers are a revolutionizing technology — they have the potential to transform business, society, and the planet for the better, and IonQ is at the forefront of this revolution.
After over 25 years of academic research, IonQ was founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates, a license to core technology from the University of Maryland and Duke University, and the goal of taking trapped ion quantum computing out of the lab and into the market. In the following three years, we raised an additional $20 million from GV, Amazon Web Services, and NEA, and built two of the world’s most accurate quantum computers.
In 2019, we raised another $55 million in a round led by Samsung and Mubadala, and announced partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to make our quantum computers available via the cloud.
In 2020 and 2021, we built additional generations of high performance quantum hardware, added Google Cloud Marketplace to our cloud partner roster and announced a series of collaborations and business partnerships with leading academic and commercial institutions.
On October 1st, 2021, IonQ began trading as IONQ on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the world's first public pure-play quantum computing company. We remain hard at work realizing the world-changing potential of quantum computing.
