The Role

BuzzFeed is looking for an experienced, analytical, and results-driven Senior SEO Strategist to lead and execute its SEO strategy across multiple BuzzFeed Inc. brands and verticals, including BuzzFeed Shopping, Tasty, and HuffPost. 

In this role, you will work closely with our editorial, analytics, and product teams to increase organic search traffic and ensure the highest level of discoverability for content across digital platforms. This is a hybrid, full-time, U.S.-based position located in our New York City office, but also open to remote candidates. This person will report to the Head of Audience Development. 

This role requires someone who is comfortable with data analysis, and SEO experimentation, and has a deep understanding of SEO best practices, including web indexing, rank tracking, keyword research, and structured data. The ideal candidate is also someone who has a proven track record of editorial SEO at a publisher, news site, agency, or similar and can partner closely with writers, editors, and product team members in order to make content recommendations, site improvements, and support SEO education across the BuzzFeed organization.

You Will

  • Monitor SEO trends, algorithm updates, and shifts in Google Search and Discover to optimize BuzzFeed’s evergreen content and breaking news, lifestyle, and shopping content.
  • Act as an SEO expert and advisor to the product team, driving forward the overall technical SEO roadmap, traffic acquisition strategies, and growth initiatives.
  • Track and analyze SEO performance using tools like SEMRush, Ahrefs, Moz, and Google Search Console. Present insights and data-driven recommendations to improve rankings and traffic.
  • Conduct keyword research, and competitive analysis, and identify content gaps to guide the editorial and affiliate content teams on traffic growth opportunities.
  • Design and implement new content experiments focused on driving SEO traffic growth.
  • Perform technical SEO audits focused on page metadata, URL structure, internal linking, loading time, and structured data.
  • Create, execute, and track internal linking strategies for all BuzzFeed.com properties to improve authority and search rankings.

You Have

  • 5+ years of experience planning, developing, and implementing SEO strategies, with experience in both editorial and technical SEO.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience using industry-leading SEO tools (SEMRush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Moz, Google Search Console).
  • Experience conducting content experiments and delivering measurable traffic improvements based on data-driven insights.
  • A deep understanding of SEO best practices and the latest trends, including familiarity with Google's E-E-A-T guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with editorial, product, and technical teams.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • A passion for staying as up-to-date as possible on SEO trends through blogs, industry news, and Google’s latest documentation.
  • A proactive, experimental approach to SEO, with a willingness to test new strategies, adapt to emerging trends, and find creative ways to increase traffic and engagement.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Looker, Tableau, or similar BI tools is a plus.
  • Experience in optimizing affiliate content and developing strategies that maximize revenue while maintaining SEO best practices.
