Adverum Biotechnologies, Inc. is a mission-driven clinical-stage company that aims to establish gene therapy as a new standard of care for highly prevalent ocular diseases with the aspiration of developing functional cures to restore vision and prevent blindness. Leveraging the research capabilities of its proprietary intravitreal (IVT) platform, Adverum is developing durable, single-administration therapies designed to be delivered in physicians’ offices to eliminate the need for frequent ocular injections to treat these diseases. By overcoming the challenges associated with current treatment paradigms for these debilitating ocular diseases, Adverum aspires to transform the standard of care, preserve vision, and create a profound societal impact around the globe.
Note to Recruiters and Agencies
All recruiter and agency inquiries must go through Adverum’s internal Talent Acquisition team. Unsolicited resumes sent to Adverum will be considered Adverum's property. Adverum’s Talent Acquisition team must expressly engage agencies for any requisition. Direct contact with hiring managers by agencies will not be tolerated and may affect your ability to work with Adverum in the future.
Adverum is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Scientist, Protein Engineering to join our growing team in the Redwood City office. This person will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to advance promising gene therapy candidates toward clinical development.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the protein engineering function. This will include playing a pivotal role in designing and engineering innovative therapeutic proteins with the necessary biological activities, positioning them as promising candidates for gene therapy delivery. They will possess expertise across workflows integral to discovering
protein therapeutics, including antibody discovery, protein expression/purification, protein characterization, and developability assessment.
What you'll do:
- Protein Engineering: Contribute to the design, expression, and purification of recombinant proteins for research and development purposes.
- Protein Characterization: Conduct comprehensive analyses of protein structure, function, and stability, including biophysical and biochemical assays.
- Collaborations: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including research, nonclinical development, and regulatory affairs, to ensure the successful advancement of our gene therapy programs.
- Author study reports and contribute to regulatory submissions for IND-enabling studies.
- Contribute to manuscripts on pharmacology, efficacy and safety in relevant animal models to support product development.
About you:
- PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with a strong foundation in protein science. With at least 8 years of postgraduate experience or a Master’s with a minimum of 12 years of Lab experience
- Proven hands-on experience in wet lab execution of protein expression (including mammalian cells, baculovirus/insect cells, and bacterial systems), purification of recombinant proteins, and their analysis.
- Expertise in protein characterization techniques (e.g., SE-HPLC, DLS, DSF, SPR, BLI).
- Experience in the design and execution of cell-based assays to test biologically active molecule activities.
- Experience with bioanalytical methods for protein quantification and characterization, including ELISA, MSD, and LC-MS/MS.
- Experience with computational protein design tools.
- Familiarity with molecular biology techniques (e.g., plasmid construction, DNA manipulation, PCR, mutagenesis).
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to design and interpret experiments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to lead protein engineering efforts and mentor junior scientists.
- A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and/or patents demonstrating expertise in protein engineering and relevant therapeutic areas.
- Experience with AAV vectors is a plus.
At Adverum, Inclusion and Diversity are at our core. We believe in the power of being your authentic self. We strive to create the space that allows for everyone in our Adverum Community to not only feel safe but also encouraged to speak, learn from each other, grow in their professions, and be the very best versions of themselves no matter what their age, ethnic background, gender, origin, religion or sexual orientation.
