As a Senior Scientist, you will lead research efforts focused on the development of next generation contact lenses and innovative materials for medical devices. This role requires a strong expertise in polymer design, synthesis and purification, material science – specifically an understanding the structure-property relationship of materials – and demands an innovative mindset to drive research forward.
This role will be based in Johns Creek, GA, and a typical day will include:

Driving research projects aimed at designing and developing advanced contact lens materials and packaging salines for biomedical applications.

Executing creative polymer design, synthesis, modification, purification, and characterization.

Applying an in-depth understanding of structure/property relationship in polymers, specifically the relationship between molecular architecture/morphology and bulk contact lens properties as well as the ability to apply an innovative mindset to overcome challenges and drive product development.

Monitoring and evaluating industry advancements, trends, and technologies in material science, polymer chemistry, and relevant technologies to enhance and guide research initiatives. Drafting new material concepts through invention disclosures and supporting patent filings as required to protect intellectual property, leveraging innovative research outcomes.

Collaborating with cross-functional teams using appropriate statistical techniques and methods to develop, execute, and analyze experimental protocols. Documenting experimental results details and conclusions in appropriate formats (laboratory notebook, memo and/or report) and presenting research findings to stakeholders.

Mentoring junior scientists and technicians, sharing expertise and fostering a collaborative research environment.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO ALCON:

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +10 yrs; Assoc.+6 yrs; M.S.+0 yrs)

The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English

Preferred Experience:

Polymer Chemistry or Synthetic Organic Chemistry is highly preferred.

High motivation in laboratory research tasks and strong hands-on bench experience.

Experience in the area of medical device research is a plus.

Use of relevant statistical techniques/ methods to plan and execute experiments and to analyze experimental data.

Experience in factorial design and mixture design are highly desirable.
