Leidos is looking for a Senior Paralegal to work on-site in support of the Tax Division of the Department of Justice, Financial Litigation Unit. Excellent opportunity for part-time law students! Hone your legal research and writing skills in this job. In this position, you will gain experience in all areas of civil litigation including drafting complaints, discovery and motions. Research legal issues that arise in the cases and conduct public asset searches to determine what assets the debtors hold. Negotiate settlements and payment plans and draft memoranda recommending that offers are either accepted or rejected. Candidates must be qualified but not necessarily experienced in these areas. Be trained by experienced DOJ attorneys. Hours are regular hours 40 hrs/week.
In the Financial Litigation Unit, the Office of Review evaluates settlement offers in the most complex and monetarily significant cases handled by the Division, collaborates with Trial Sections in negotiating settlement proposals in light of litigation potential and policy considerations, furnishes advice and assistance in complex cases, takes final action on settlements within its authority, and advises the Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division on settlements that require final action at a higher level.
Responsibilities include:

Works with ALS (primarily Case Managers) to make sure the case has the necessary technology and is properly addressing E-Discovery;

Compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs and other legal documents;

Research legal issues that arise in the cases and conduct public asset searches to determine what assets the debtors hold;

Negotiate settlements and payment plans;

Draft memoranda recommending that offers either be accepted or rejected;

Summarizes depositions and other transcripts; maintains case files; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks and controls document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery);

indexes, tracks and exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial. Prepares exhibit cross-references;

Assists attorneys in courtroom;

Reviews documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
Required Qualifications:
- Paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study (or equivalent)
- 2+ years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience, including at least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
- Knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
- Knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
- Familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
- Familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
- Must be knowledgeable user of the Government's office and network environment, including but not limited to, word processing, database, spreadsheet, imaging, and telecommunications systems.
- Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
- Law degree, or 1 year of law school completed
- Trial experience
- Current or active clearance
- Experience with negotiation, settlements, or collections
- Experience drafting subpoena’s, researching public records, and public records filing/recording
- An understanding of business entities, lien priorities, trusts, estates and probate.
- Baseline understanding of accounting principles, or basic tax preparation
This position is covered under the Service Contract Act and is subject to minimum requirements. Leidos ensures that all provisions are satisfied. The pay for this position will be $30.45/hr.
