The Team
Within Upstart’s Small Dollar Loans, we’re building an exciting new product, bolstering our mission of putting technology to work for everyday Americans—not to fabricate demand or profit from hardship, but to empower people with the tools and access they need to anticipate, adapt, and ultimately to gain control over their financial lives - something that’s desirable up and down the income spectrum. We’re building a new, AI-native team from the ground up, rethinking how we collaborate and the tools we use. As a Senior Mobile Engineer at Upstart, you will build features which engage our borrowers where they are, on mobile devices. You will lead projects which align the Upstart mobile strategy and with the Small Dollar Loan strategy. You will help move the Upstart Mobile platform forward, adding more capabilities to allow all Upstart verticals to build mobile features. This role will report initially to the VP of Engineering for Small Dollar Loans.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Build high quality mobile and web features for the Small Dollar Loans product to engage and delight our customers
- Lead projects from requirements, through design, and into the hands of our customers
- Mentor other engineers
- Collaborate with other engineers on developing northstar designs and engineering strategy
- Review code from other engineers within the team and across Upstart
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- 4+ years of experience developing mobile applications professionally
- 2+ years of experience developing full stack web applications professionally
- Fluency with React Native, and a proven experience building successful React Native mobile apps from inception to launch
- Proficiency with either Kotlin, Ruby, Python, or TypeScript and at least one other programming language
- Passionate about the end-user experience, exhibiting a product-oriented mindset
- Depth of experience in mobile and software development principals and best practices for creating scalable and maintainable systems
- Proven ability to effectively analyze and solve complex problems
- Preferred qualifications:
- AI-native experience leveraging AI tooling to help improve development efficiency, processes, collaboration, or communication
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for the quality and timely delivery of work
- Ability to thrive both in self-directed work environments and in collaborative settings, contributing positively to team dynamics
- Demonstrated ability to take feedback well and actively incorporate it into work with a desire to continuously improve
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates across all U.S. time zones.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office. Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

$163,600—$226,400 USD
