Job Description
The Senior Manager, Total Rewards is accountable for managing the day-to-day operational activities of the compensation, benefits and retirement portfolio, and providing subject matter expertise in the design and implementation of programs and policies related to the portfolio. Reporting to the Senior Director, Payroll, Benefits and Total Rewards, the Senior Manager role leads a team of professionals focused on delivering valued employee programs.
The successful candidate will bring critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, a strong attention to detail and a desire to “dig in” to learn the business while being mindful of the strong culture and commitment of the Company to provide care and services to our residents and support our team members across Canada as we “help people live better”.
This position will be based at our Head Office in Markham, Ontario, with flexibility for in-office work as part of our hybrid work model.
Accountabilities:
- Lead the development and execution of complex cross-functional strategies to address opportunities and issues related to Total Rewards programs and policies
- Monitor Total Rewards programs to ensure alignment with business objectives, union arrangements and HR priorities, and ensure consideration to longer term business strategies and market developments
- Implement programs and policies that align with best practices and partner on technology solutions to deliver these programs
- Manage the annual compensation cycle, with a focus on improving the delivery and creating an efficient process
- Work with our vendor to deliver a job evaluation system and compensation philosophy that supports organizational needs, specifically with respect to attracting and retaining talent. Define market competitive salary ranges and incentive targets, and assess the competitiveness of current compensation to highlight any gaps
- Ensure the benefits and retirement programs are competitive, cost-effective, well administered and communicated to employees
- Coordinate with vendors to ensure exceptional service delivery, continuous improvement and beneficial contract terms
- Promote employee understanding of benefits, retirement, leave and compensation programs by creating communication materials to support employee needs.
- Provide leadership and coaching to a team of Total Rewards professionals, building bench strength and ownership attributes
- Act as a trusted advisor to HR Business Partners, Labour Relations and other functions within the organization
- Manage conflicting priorities to deliver highest value initiatives that support key business objectives, while respecting organizational and team capacity
- Effectively influence cross-functional teams for Total Rewards, defining the operational skills, processes and environment required to meet program needs, strategic goals and deliver an exceptional employee experience
Qualifications and Experience
- University degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
- 7+ years of post-university work experience, including at least 2 years leading a team and managing strategic objectives
- Experience working in a highly unionized environment is required
- Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills with the ability to complete projects on time
- Excellent interpersonal skills - a team player who is able to act as both a leader and an individual contributor, as required
- Confident and effective communication skills (written and verbal)
- Adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to quickly pivot when priorities change
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot issues
- Dedicated to providing an exceptional employee experience with a focus on educating employees through regular communication efforts
- Planning and organizational skills with proven ability to manage competing priorities with tight timelines
- Workday HRIS experience required / preferred
