IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
We are looking for a Senior Manager for our Environment and Power team. As a leader of the Engineering and Technology organization, you will lead a cross-functional team whose mission is to help IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
In this role, you’re responsible for the component and subsystem development and delivery for our quantum computer structural, environmental, and power systems, including:
- Structural racks, enclosures, mounts, isolation tables and floors
- In-the-box environmental control systems such as HVAC, liquid cooling, purges, acoustic and vibration isolation and control
- Electrical power distribution, conditioning, and monitoring
- Routed systems for electrical, optical, and fluid system-level interconnects
- Health and environmental sensors and monitoring
- External industrial design, physical security and customer interfaces
Success looks like:
- Designing clear multi-year roadmaps for all key subsystems with success criteria defined
- Building highly productive cross-functional teams — mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and software engineers alike should be blended throughout your organization to create modular, verifiable components
- Working closely with the products and architecture team to develop the physical implementation of how our entire systems are designed
- Working closely with the manufacturing teams to develop robust, deployable systems that reduce assembly, installation and commissioning times
Your team’s job is to develop the scalable and modular backbone for our quantum computers that can support and connect the computer subsystems together into a functional system while providing a tightly controlled operating environment.
You’d be a good fit with:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant degree
- 10 years of experience with the mechanical design of rack-mounted electronics enclosures, fluid and thermal cooling systems, thermal management, and test and characterization of hardware
- Demonstrated experience managing technology teams and growing leaders
- Strong background in design, mechanical analyses, thermal and structural engineering, cable management and routing, build, and integration
- Comfortable being hands-on in a lab environment
- Experience with mechanical design and analyses of software tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS Fluent, ANSYS IcePak, COMSOL
- Good knowledge of fixture design, machine shop capabilities, and manufacturing processes
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
You’d be a great fit with:
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant discipline
- 15 years of industry experience and 5 years of direct management experience
- Experience with the design and implementation of thermal and cable management systems in data centers is an asset
- Experience with AC and DC electrical power distribution systems
- Knowledge and experience with complex optical systems, lasers, free-space optical systems and components
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work well with customers, suppliers, and in a team environment

What We Do
Quantum computers are a revolutionizing technology — they have the potential to transform business, society, and the planet for the better, and IonQ is at the forefront of this revolution.
After over 25 years of academic research, IonQ was founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates, a license to core technology from the University of Maryland and Duke University, and the goal of taking trapped ion quantum computing out of the lab and into the market. In the following three years, we raised an additional $20 million from GV, Amazon Web Services, and NEA, and built two of the world’s most accurate quantum computers.
In 2019, we raised another $55 million in a round led by Samsung and Mubadala, and announced partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to make our quantum computers available via the cloud.
In 2020 and 2021, we built additional generations of high performance quantum hardware, added Google Cloud Marketplace to our cloud partner roster and announced a series of collaborations and business partnerships with leading academic and commercial institutions.
On October 1st, 2021, IonQ began trading as IONQ on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the world's first public pure-play quantum computing company. We remain hard at work realizing the world-changing potential of quantum computing.
