Job Description
NBC News Digital is looking for a Sr. Manager of Data Engineering to support the continued evolution of our digital platforms and data infrastructure. As a core member of the data engineering team, you will play a critical role in building and scaling the data systems that power NBC News' digital transformation. Working alongside our engineers, you will manage and mentor a team of talented engineers while ensuring the successful design, deployment, and maintenance of data pipelines and applications that drive business insights across NBC News Digital.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead a team that shapes how data is integrated into the development of NBC News products, working in close collaboration with cross-functional teams including data scientists, DevOps, and business stakeholders.
This position reports to the Sr. Director of Data Science and Engineering.
Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Lead a team of data engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable data systems. Provide guidance, mentorship, and career development opportunities for junior and mid-level engineers. Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning within the team.
  • Project Management: Oversee the execution of data engineering projects, ensuring they align with both business needs and technical standards. Manage timelines, resources, and deliverables, working closely with stakeholders to prioritize tasks and remove roadblocks.
  • Data Pipeline Development: Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of data pipelines that integrate data from various sources, ensuring data availability, integrity, and consistency across systems.
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and product teams to ensure the seamless integration of data solutions with business intelligence and machine learning applications.
  • Process Optimization: Continuously evaluate and improve the development, testing, and deployment processes. Implement best practices for code quality, pipeline optimization, and data governance.
  • Strategic Support: Collaborate with the Principal Data Engineer to develop long-term strategies for data architecture, storage solutions, and infrastructure that support scalable, reliable data systems.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the bridge between the data engineering team and business stakeholders, ensuring data projects align with business objectives and user needs. Communicate project status, risks, and successes to senior leadership and other key stakeholders.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with emerging technologies and trends in data engineering. Evaluate new tools, frameworks, and approaches that can drive improvements in the data pipeline and engineering processes.


Qualifications

  • Proven Leadership Experience: 5+ years of experience in data engineering or a related technical field, with at least 2+ years in a management or team leadership role. Experience leading technical teams, setting priorities, and delivering on complex projects.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and other data engineering technologies. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred), big data tools (e.g., Spark, Hadoop), and distributed systems.
  • Data Pipeline Experience: Experience building and maintaining end-to-end data pipelines and data infrastructure. Familiarity with ETL frameworks, data warehousing, and data lakes is highly desirable.
  • Collaboration Skills: Ability to work cross-functionally with product teams, data scientists, DevOps, and business leaders. Strong communicator, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Agile & Process Management: Experience with Agile development methodologies, including sprint planning, project tracking, and prioritization. Comfortable using project management tools (e.g., Jira, Trello).
  • Data Governance & Security: Familiarity with data governance principles and best practices, including data quality, data lineage, and security standards.
  • Education: B.S. degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.


Bonus Points:

  • Experience with Data Streaming: Experience with building scalable, real-time data streaming pipelines using tools like Apache Kafka, Spark Streaming, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with Airflow: Experience with Apache Airflow for workflow orchestration and DAG management.
  • Cloud Infrastructure Management: Experience with AWS infrastructure tools (e.g., Lambda, S3, Redshift) and serverless technologies.
  • Leadership in Media/News: Experience working within a media, publishing, or news organization is a plus, with an understanding of how data can drive business transformation in the media space.


Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Salary range: $185,000-$215,000 (bonus eligible)
