Newsweek is seeking a highly creative, concept-driven Illustrator to join our in-house team. The ideal candidate will have a bold visual imagination and the ability to produce sophisticated photographic illustrations, photo collages, and CGI-inspired visuals that bring Newsweek’s editorial content to life. This position will play a key role in defining the visual tone of our magazine covers, features, and branded storytelling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create original, editorially compelling illustrations for feature stories, magazine covers, digital platforms, and branded content.
- Produce work that balances bold concepts with aesthetic clarity—often translating abstract, intellectual, or controversial ideas into powerful visuals.
- Develop a consistent visual language in line with Newsweek’s evolving editorial voice.
- Collaborate closely with the art director, photo team and editorial staff from ideation to final execution.
- Work across a variety of media, including photographic collage, digital painting, 3D renderings, and mixed media.
- Maintain high standards of production quality, detail, and originality across all projects.
- Manage multiple assignments and meet tight weekly and monthly deadlines.
- Adapt and evolve artwork for use in motion graphics, video treatments, online storytelling, and social media campaigns.
Qualifications:
- 3–5+ years of experience creating editorial illustrations, photo-illustrations, or concept-driven visual artwork.
- A portfolio showcasing original, conceptual illustration work, ideally in photographic or CGI styles.
- Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator); experience with 3D software (ZBrush, Maya, Cinema4D, Blender, etc.) is a strong plus.
- Advanced knowledge of rendering techniques, lighting, shading, and texturing in 3D environments.
- Deep understanding of composition, visual metaphor, color, and storytelling.
- Ability to respond quickly to briefs and turn around high-quality visuals under tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with print and digital editorial workflows.
- Strong communication skills and openness to feedback and collaboration.
- A passion for current affairs, pop culture, and provocative editorial storytelling.
- Excellent written and spoken English; flexibility in working hours.
Desirables
- Familiarity with AI graphic design tools, such as Runway, Firefly, etc.
- Experience with and understanding of motion graphics and animation
