The Position
The Senior Director works on complex issues that require an in-depth knowledge of the company and its long-term ambitions. Develops NNI's policy positions, in line with Enterprise Strategy. Manages relationships with select government agencies. Serves as a subject matter expert. Solicits internal stakeholder insights to analyze the business impact of select policy proposals - to NNI and the broader industry. Educates and enables broader PA Team and NNI business to leverage these positions.
They lead and manage individual contributors in the Policy team, actively participate with the Public Affairs Leadership Team (PALT), and assist in shaping the overall team strategy and culture. Collaborate and coordinate with peers and cross-functional colleagues locally and globally.
Relationships
Reports to the Vice President, Public Affairs and has direct supervisory responsibility for a team of individual contributors.
Other internal relationships include all other Market Access & Public Affairs teams, Finance, Medical, Legal, Compliance, Communications and other key stakeholders locally and globally.
External relationships include select federal agencies that may develop health care policies that could impact the pharmaceutical industry. Interactions frequently involve interactions with senior level leaders regarding matters of significance to NNI.
Essential Functions
- Lead and develop team members with a focus on managing to business expectations while also supporting individual development aspirations and fostering a positive team culture
- Ensure team members have deep understanding of their assigned policy areas and the potential impact to NNI's business
- Policy areas may include, but are not limited to: NN Foundation, Quality, Medicare, Medicaid, Transparency, Adherence, Importation, Reference Pricing, Pricing / Price Increases, Stem-Cell, Research, NIH, Reimbursement, IP, Labor / Employment, Tax, Trade, Privacy, Data Transparency
- Proactively explore and evaluate potential/emerging policy proposals
- Build and maintain strategic networks of relationships internally (locally and globally)
- Clearly communicate with federal agencies on NNI's positions; develop and cultivate relationships with key partners
- Actively engage with other members of the PALT to ensure a coordinated position is pulled through the broader PA team
- Coordinate with, provide education to, and communicate proactively with internal stakeholders to effectively collaborate and inform
- Administrative: Develop and monitor performance against budget; Oversee development and negotiation of relevant contracts, Establish, oversee implementation, and monitor adherence to administrative policies and procedures; Evaluate appropriate use of resources; Review and audit expense reports
Physical Requirements
10-20% overnight travel required.
Development of People
Supervisory
Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process.
Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility.
Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred
- 12+ years of policy development, advocacy, government affairs or other relevant experience required
- Strong relationship builder, cross-functional team collaborator and leadership skills required
- Previous team leadership experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated career progression with increasing roles of responsibility
- Pharmaceutical/healthcare industry experience and knowledge of NNI's therapeutic areas and marketplace preferred
- Strong executive presence and communication/presentation skills that engage senior leaders among internal and external audiences
- Ability to convey passion and generate excitement and enthusiasm about Novo Nordisk
- Proven track record of effective strategic planning, execution and follow up
- Previous experience working in a matrixed organizational structure
The base compensation range for this position is $280,000 to $300,000 Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.
Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
