JOB PURPOSE 

The Sr. Debt Products Manager primary purpose is to ensure objectives related to credit underwriting for new loan origination activities are met.  The Sr. Debt Products Manager is responsible for producing

consistent new deal underwriting which analyzes, presents and ultimately mitigates risk for any new credit that is being recommended for approval by US CRE. The position is ultimately accountable for all material presented throughout the loan origination life-cycle, in New Deals Committee, Prescreen, and Loan Presentations. The Sr. Debt Products Manager will work in close collaboration with their assigned Client Management Regional Head, Market Leads and Group Heads, Asset Management team and their Debt Products Team Lead in various capacities, throughout the loan life-cycle.   The role has both external and internal responsibilities including direct engagement with Syndications and Capital Markets, amongst others. The Sr. Debt Products Manager will have direct Borrower interaction and will be responsible for maintaining the client-focused nature of the CRE business. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Underwriting/Credit Approval/Loan Closing

  • Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of the credit life cycle (i.e. underwriting, loan presentations, closing, etc.)
  • Accountable for accuracy of loan approval documents prepared
  • Prepare materials presented for pre-screen by assigned Client Management (CM) team
  • Exercise non-credit approval authority up to approved limits
  • Stay current on industry/market conditions, ensuring policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines (identification of emerging issues) remain up to date and adjust or recommend changes to procedures and standards as appropriate
  • Recommend appropriate risk ratings in collaboration with DP Team Lead
  • Understand CIBC appetite/limit capacity for deal-specific attributes including business execution, security, HVCRE, etc.
  • Escalate “Issues List” from loan document negotiation to Client Manager and DP Team Lead on new transactions as applicable

Risk Management

  • Work with DP Team Lead on evolving trends in Commercial Real Estate with collaboration from the assigned Asset Manager. Ensure that the policy, procedure and reference material which govern loan originations and closings are appropriately followed
  • Provide feedback to the DP Team Lead HDP in preparation for ERM’s Known and Emerging Risk Meetings
  • Provide appropriate materials and submissions as needed to support the HPA in response to regulators and auditors – internal and external
  • Work with the DP Team Lead to ensure issue remediation strategy is sufficient, sustainable, and timely (in accordance with remediation plan/target date). Work with the DP Team Lead and/or HDP in developing and executing management action plans, working with Governance & Controls team (1B), Independent Risk Management (as required per the applicable policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines), and Audit as needed
  • Ensure that the HDP has the appropriate materials and submissions as needed to support regulatory filings
  • Respond to second line challenge of line of business risk identification and review and provide input to materials generated for risk identification processes (e.g. risk self-assessments, minutes, and decks)
  • Escalate data incident reports and ensure information is captured accurately (including root cause, impact, and control analysis)

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Build and maintain cross-functional partnerships and networks to contribute and drive strong execution around key business initiatives
  • Maintain strong partnerships with other business functions/units (i.e. Credit, Finance, etc.)

  • Speaking up if witnessing behaviors that drive poor or unfair outcomes for clients, team members or other stakeholders
  • Escalating matters that can result in adverse market practices and outcomes, thereby negatively impacting CIBC’s reputation as a leading financial institution

AUTHORITIES/DECISION RIGHTS

  • As a key contributor to the business unit, this job has the authority to recommend changes to business processes in order to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of 6 years of applicable experience in underwriting, structuring, loan closing, documentation, and portfolio management
  • Solid working knowledge of regulatory expectations and industry best practices in risk management
  • Understanding of financial risks (i.e., credit, market and/or liquidity) and/or non-financial risks (i.e., operational, compliance, reputation, strategic), and of financial services businesses and products
  • Strong team player and able to work with productively with colleagues towards common goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Results oriented with a high degree of attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate up, down and laterally
  • Ability to provide credit expertise within Commercial Real Estate
  • Expected to be well versed in all key systems, applications, and models used including proficiency in Microsoft Office products with advanced knowledge of financial analysis and modeling
  • Attend industry events to maintain current market knowledge

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This role operates within a normal office environment with little exposure to adverse working conditions.
  • Work locations available in Miami, West Palm Beach, or Miami

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $115,000.00 - $160,000.00 for the market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component.
