Position Background and Scope

Teledyne Brown Engineering has provided software engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced analytics in support of DoD operational health and readiness since 2001.  Our team works directly with the military medical community at the Service, Combatant Command, Joint Staff, and DoD Headquarters Levels.

We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join our Advanced Analytics team whose mission is to provide insights and solve problems in support of Navy Medicine’s mission, force readiness, and health care management.

This team provides custom analytic findings and develops, maintains, and delivers decision support capability tools to the U.S. Navy operational medical community.  The primary objective of the role is to work directly with our customers to identify requirements, convert requirements into functioning prototypes, and support the customer community in their use of the tools.

Position Summary

Teledyne is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to lead a team of Data Scientists performing data analytics for Navy Medical Forces Atlantic in Portsmouth, VA. The candidate will work with customer subject matter experts, data scientists, business analysts, and data engineers to identify opportunities and to execute and maintain projects of executive interest.  The candidate will work with leadership, managers, and technical staff to understand business needs, provide internal and external advice on the development of projects and technical plans, and deliver results while building relations and becoming a trusted advisor.  

The candidate will participate in the planning and development of automated data tools, dashboards, and other data-oriented tools that support executive-level decisions. Position will require infrequent travel in support of customer requirements. This is a hybrid remote work position that requires the candidate to reside within commuting distance of Portsmouth, VA. 

 Position Responsibilities

  • Work closely with customers, managers, and technical team to define program scope, goals, and deliverables
  • Manage assigned team to develop long term analysis products
  • Direct and work with the team to respond to ad hoc requests for specific analysis (short term).
  • Prepare and present project communications for customers and key stakeholders
  • Provide leadership for multi-disciplinary teams in a collaborative environment
  • Author technical reports and review team products for consistency and accuracy
  • Manage the performance and professional development of team members using Teledyne’s established workflows

Education and/or Experience

  • Requires a B.S. degree in Data Science, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Mathematics, or related analytic field
  • Minimum eight (8) years of relevant professional experience, including three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Superb communication skills with the ability to elicit goals, needs, and outcomes with leaders at all levels and across different organizations

Highly Desirable Skills and Characteristics

  • M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Mathematics, or related analytic field
  • Demonstrated success in customer-facing roles with frequent stakeholder interactions at all levels
  • 5+ years of direct experience applying operations research, statistics, or data science techniques to develop analysis products
  • Solid foundational knowledge of analytic techniques (e.g., statistics, queueing theory, probability, mathematical optimization, machine learning, systems engineering, decision analysis)
  • Proficiency in analytic programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL, C#, Julia)
  • Advanced data visualization experience to clearly communicate complex data relationships
  • Demonstrated experience leading analytic projects
  • Demonstrated experience developing a team of analysts
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Power platform environments including SharePoint for artifact hosting & publication
  • Familiarity with software development life cycle methodologies and principles
  • Experience working within the Military Health System or the Department of Defense

Due to classified work at the facility and related access restrictions, successful applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be able to gain and maintain a DOD Secret level clearance.
