About The Role:
We are looking for a business-oriented Senior Counsel - Product & Privacy who is passionate about technology and its potential to improve spaces and the residential experience to join our Legal team. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with global teams across DOOR to advise on product development and initiatives, and track regulations and emerging privacy standards affecting access control technology and IoT devices. You will be working in an innovative space, at an exciting time at DOOR as we build a new platform and scale our offerings.
In this role, you will primarily counsel our Product/Engineering and business teams on product compliance, data privacy matters, and collaborate with our Security team. You will also handle legal and regulatory matters related to hardware devices and SaaS offerings as well as assess legal and ethical risks related to AI in access control solutions and smart spaces. This role is remote (U.S-based) and reports to the Associate General Counsel - Go-to-Market, Compliance & Privacy.
The annual salary range for this position is $160,000 to $210,000. We take into consideration your background and experience in determining final salary. Accordingly, base pay offered may vary depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of medical, dental, vision, retirement and other benefits, unlimited paid-time off, as well as equity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise our Product and Engineering team on legal and regulatory issues throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Advise on privacy and data protection matters, ensuring compliance with US and Canadian data protections laws.
- Provide legal guidance on AI-driven products and features and ensure compliance with emerging AI laws and guidance in the U.S. (both federal and state) and Canada’s AI and Data Act (AIDA).
- Draft, review and negotiate data protection and security agreements with third-party vendors, SaaS partners, and last-mile service providers
- Support the design and delivery of smart locks, IoT devices and SaaS solutions, addressing legal considerations specific to hardware manufacturing and sales.
- Monitor and provide guidance on evolving privacy, consumer protection, and technology regulations, helping DOOR stay ahead of regulatory trends.
- Work with the Associate General Counsel to develop and maintain policies for user data collection, smart access logs, and IoT device tracking.
- Lead privacy investigations, reporting obligations, and remediation efforts in the event of data breaches, cyberattacks, or unauthorized access.
- Coordinate with IT, Security, and Customer Service teams on security incident handling and notifications.
- Advise on consumer protection, marketing, and advertising matters to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement risk management strategies.
- Assist with drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts as needed.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of legal experience in product counseling for B2B technology companies, including a minimum of 2 years of in-house experience. A mix of law firm and in-house experience is preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong academic credentials
- Experience advising software and hardware product managers and engineers on regulatory compliance and privacy matters.
- CIPP/US or CIPP/E certification strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of regulations related to hardware manufacturing.
- J.D. from an accredited law school and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
