The Role
The Senior Controls Systems Engineer will design and implement control systems for a nuclear microreactor, develop algorithms, and perform testing and validation of control systems. They will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure systems meet regulatory requirements and function effectively in various applications.
Summary Generated by Built In

Radiant is an El-Segundo, CA-based clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Senior Controls Systems Engineer

Radiant is seeking a Senior Control Systems Engineer to own designs from requirements capture through operation. You will own algorithm development, simulation, implementation, and validation of a nuclear microreactor control system, including: reactivity controls, primary loop mass flow control, and alternator speed control as well as multiple reactors on microgrids. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with regulatory requirements, developing analysis for system-level coupled controls, and performing hardware tests and data review for validation. This role requires collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams responsible for construction of the systems and components involved in the control loops.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Responsible Engineer with total ownership over the Kaleidos control systems including generator and supervisory controls.
  • Responsible for subsystem controls i.e. alternator shaft speed, reactivity control surfaces, and electrical power conversion.
    • Develops algorithms, software, and analytic models for control systems to derive requirements for components and subsystems.
    • Performs prototyping, testing, and validation and verification of implemented control systems.
  • Documents and supports regulatory review of control systems.
  • Develop methods to analyze and test control system performance.
  • Write high quality embedded controls application software on ARM processors.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 5+ years experience designing control systems involving coupled controls for timing critical architectures.
  • Deep knowledge of modern motor control algorithms including field-oriented control and PWM techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with multilevel inverters.
  • Expert in designing the control algorithms, sampling rate selection, bandwidth design and stability analysis.
  • Expertise with monte-carlo analysis, uncertainty quantification, system identification, and phase margin estimation.
  • Familiarity with field bus networking protocols such as EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, CANOpen, Ethernet, RS-422/485.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in physics or an engineering discipline.
  • Own implementation of control algorithms for electric motors and inverters in embedded C.

Desired Qualifications & Skills

  • 8+ years experience in control systems.
  • Direct experience with controls and modeling of exponential systems.
  • Experience working with motors, alternators, and power conversion equipment.
  • Experience with autonomous systems and fault detection, isolation, and recovery design.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to achieve company goals.

Employee Benefits for Eligible Employees:

  • Stock: Substantial incentive stock plan for all full time, salaried employees.
  • Medical: 100% up to base silver level plan for employee + 50% dependents, offers up to Platinum plans.
