ENGINEERING - EPIC GAMES SERVICESWhat We Do
Driving the plug-in power behind Unreal Engine 5. We bridge connections for licensees and our own internal game teams to online services. This allows games like Fortnite to utilize a combination of platform online services as well as Epic’s own online services to build cross-platform online features. Login, parties, voice chat, matchmaking, purchasing, cloud storage, and analytics are just a few examples of online features that our Online Game Services team helps games utilize.
What You'll Do
Matchmaking is at the heart of Epic’s first party successes, bringing players together across the many experiences such as Battle Royale, Lego, Festival, and Rocket Racing. We own and foster relationships with both our external partners and our own internal game teams. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll join our mission in delivering free, cross-platform game services for all developers. This role will help in building the future of matchmaking within Epic Online Services that powers games, such as Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys. Epic believes in an open, integrated gaming community and this opportunity is to help us build just that on a global scale. As a member of our team, you will lead us to craft highly available, high throughput, low latency services at scale, synchronous and asynchronous services, persistent connection services, and a variety of other systems. These will all help to power our internal products and enable external development teams all over the world. In this role, you will
- Assess challenges, design solutions, and implement them
- Oversee technical design and drive implementation of robust online solutions
- Write and maintain distributed systems to handle large scale challenges
- Own the entire lifecycle of services, including live operations and deployment
- Collaborate with service owners, producers and other cloud, infrastructure and embedded QA/DevOps engineers to ship quality software
- Deliver ongoing, transparent communication with a focus on expectations, fostering trust with internal stakeholders and external partners
- Provide technical leadership to guide the team and wider organization to deliver performant, maintainable and well-documented services
What we're looking for
- 5+ years software engineering industry experience developing online systems
- Experience working with large scale, distributed systems (AWS, Redis, Kafka, Kubernetes, Java, Spring)
- Proven track record of growing, guiding, and mentoring team members
- Proven track record of operating production online services at scale, leveraging industry best practices and standards
- Experience & comfort working in an ambiguous and sometimes chaotic environment
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to provide, solicit and accept feedback constructively
This role is open to multiple locations across the US (including CA).

The expected annual base pay range(s) for this position are detailed below. Each base pay range is relevant only for individuals who are residents of or will be expected to work within the specified locale. Compensation varies based on a variety of factors, which include (but aren’t limited to) things such as skills and competencies, qualifications, knowledge, and experience. In addition to base pay, most employees are eligible to participate in Epic’s generous benefit plans and discretionary incentive programs (subject to the terms of those plans or programs).
California Base Pay Range
$190,010—$278,682 USD
