General Summary:
- Vertex Pharmaceuticals is looking for a Senior Accountant to join its team supporting its accounting and finance operations in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
- The role is a key part of Record-To-Report and Procure-To-Pay function for Vertex’s Brazilian operations and will be responsible for managing the month-end process.
- This position will partner not only with other members of the international accounting department, but also with teams across Vertex Pharmaceuticals Brazil and the Company’s outsourced accounting and financial service provider.
- The successful candidate will have exposure to key accounting and reporting areas throughout the Company, which offer development opportunities within the organization.
- Leveraging their analytical skills and accounting expertise they will have the opportunity to make suggestions and implement improvements to ensure continuous enhancement across the Brazilian organization.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
MONTHLY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Period end accounting activities, including the completion of month-end close journals, including monthly and quarterly BS and PL Flux analysis.
- Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations in accordance with SOX 404 requirements (USGAAP) and BRGAAP and USGAAP reconciliation.
- Ensure internal policies and SOX procedures are always adhered to.
- Assist with internal, SOX audit queries and tax audits from Local Tax Authorities.
- Liaison with various stakeholders within the international accounting and finance and team.
- Working with the Company’s outsourced accounting and financial service provider, assist with the opening and reviewing purchase requisitions and ensuring invoices are paid in a timely nature
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Document and manage accounting processes and best practices.
- Build a partnership of trust and open communication between the other departments within Vertex Pharmaceuticals Brazil and across the international business.
- Improve and develop processes, controls and systems including creation and maintenance of process notes.
- Assist with ad-hoc accounting projects as required.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Good technical knowledge of accounting and finance processes.
- Experience of preparing high quality balance sheet reconciliations and an aptitude for using them to identify potential accounting issues that need further investigation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills allowing to collaborate across all levels of the business.
- Proven communication, negotiation and influencing skills in working with multiple stakeholders across multiple departments.
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills including advanced Excel expertise.
- Oracle R12, OBIEE, HFM and SMART View (Essbase data sources) or SAP experience an advantage.
- Experience of working Big 4 or public audit company and in an International Shared Service centre and within a SOX compliant environment.
- Knowledge and experience with direct tax.
- Fluent English and Portuguese is required, Spanish is a plus.
Education and Experience:
- Recently qualified or working towards an Accounting Qualification.
- Requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in accounting or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience in a corporate accounting environment
