The Role
As Scientist-1 in the Reagent Science division, you will join a highly multi-disciplinary team that works at a fast pace to create robust and innovative products for the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms offered by Illumina. You will deploy a variety of analytical methodologies, biochemical and biophysical assays to drive the progress of the latest ILMN technology. You are going to focus on the characterization of novel enzymes and formulations that will be commercialized as reagents for the next Illumina sequencing chemistry.
Together with you team members, you will share the responsibility of developing stable and robust enzyme-dependent reagents and you will learn how to perform on-sequencer optimization of those reagents. And our team of talented scientists will be there to support this journey into R&D methods and platforms, helping you to develop the necessary skills to progress your career.
Key Responsibilities:
- Optimization and execution of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology lab-based experimentation to characterize new and existing reagents, enzymes, and processes to achieve commercial levels of stability, robustness, and performance
- Operation of state-of-the-art equipment including plate readers, Illumina sequencers and liquid handling robotics
- Communication and presentation of results to local and global project teams
- Highly accurate recording and documentation of procedures and results
- Manage goals within defined timeline
- Perform data analysis and interpretation of large data sets
- Troubleshoot instrumentation issues
- Effective collaboration with other scientists including bioinformaticians, chemists and protein engineers

Preferred Background, Skills And Experience
- A Bachelor’s/Advanced degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biophysics, Protein Chemistry, Molecular Biology or a related field
- 1+ years laboratory experience in academia, a research institute, a biotech company or a drug discovery company desirable
- Strong team-player attitude
- Good communication, record keeping and presentation skills
- Good understanding of statistical significance, replicates, controls
- The capability to be flexible in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
- The ideal candidate should have experience with at least one of the following techniques: polymerase activity assays, kinase activity assays, Fluorescence Polarisation/Anisotropy assays, FRET, HPLC of proteins/peptides/oligonucleotides, protein Size Exclusion Chromatography, SPR, BLI Octet, DLS, EMSA, Calorimetry (ITC, DSC), AlphaScreen Assays.
- Experience with one or more of the following approaches will be an advantage but is not essential: plate readers, automated pipetting robots, Next Generation Sequencing, characterisation of DNA binding proteins, single molecule spectroscopy, characterisation of fast kinetics (Stop-Flow or Quench-Flow),X-Ray Crystallography of proteins, Electron Microscopy, SEC-MALS, JMP-SAS software
